About this file
This document is a Work Data Sheet that provides detailed specifications for the construction of wire fences and gates for a federal contract opportunity. The key details are:
The fence type is a combination of barbless and barbed wire, with 12.5 gauge wires and steel T-posts. Specific requirements are provided for the top, intermediate, and bottom wires, as well as the vertical and horizontal brace posts. Line post spacing, post lengths, and wire gate dimensions are also specified. The document notes that terrain and subsurface conditions may require alternate installation methods.
The related federal contract opportunity is for "Wildlife Friendly Fencing Phase 1", a construction project to remove and reconstruct approximately 17 miles of 4-strand barbed and barbless wire fence in Beaverhead County, Montana. The contract is a Firm Fixed Price, single award with an estimated value between $250,000 and $500,000. It is set aside for Small Business concerns, and proposals are due by a date specified in the solicitation.

Type of top wire: 12.5 gauge Barbless with Class 1 coating (USA Made) Type of intermediate wires: 12.5 gauge Barbed with Class 1 coating (USA Made) Type of bottom wire: 12.5 gauge Barbless with Class 1 coating (USA Made) Type of T-post: 5’6” 1.33#/ft. Steel (USA Made) Type of Vertical Brace Post: min. diameter 5”x7’ round treated ground contact rated wood Type of Horizontal Brace Post: min. diameter 4”x8’ round treated ground contact rated wood
Wire locations/dimensions in inches (spacing):
• A top wire no more than 40”-42” above the ground
• At least 12” between the top two wires
• At least 16-18” between the bottom wire and the ground (max 18”)
• Smooth wire for the top and bottom wire
• No vertical stays in main fence (4’x3” vertical wood stays are required in wire gates)
Line post spacing: 12 foot 0 inches
Length of vertical wood posts: 7 foot 0 inches
Depth of wood posts in ground (minimum): 2 foot 6 inches
Length of steel line posts: 5 foot 6 inches
Depth of steel line posts in ground (minimum): 1 foot 6 inches
Wire Gate Width: 16 foot 6 inches (see wire gate specifications Attachment 3)
Metal Gate Specifications: Minimum 16 gauge steel tubing, Min. 2” for post and rails, minimum 1.5” for vertical tubing, fixed hinge bolts to go completely through support post, chain closure.
Jack and Rail segments use 12.5’x4-4.5” preserved rails. Jacks use 7’x5” notched “dado” preserved jack legs with bottom brace. Jack segments will have four rails on the front and one rub rail on the back. Bracing will depend on length of jack segments and terrain.
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS
Terrain may make some of the areas inaccessible to any vehicle traffic. Some areas have surface and subsurface rock which may require wood posts and t-posts to be drilled. If subsurface rock prevents drilling, alternate means of inline and end bracing are approved as long as they are structurally equal to or better than specified.
