NGWSP PUMPING PLANTS 2&3 Federal contract opportunity
Solicitation number
140R4022R0010
Issued by
Department of the Interior Bureau of Reclamation

About this file

This document provides details on a federal contract opportunity for the construction of two pumping plants. The solicitation number is 140R4022R0010 for the NGWSP PUMPING PLANTS 2&3 opportunity issued by the Department of the Interior Bureau of Reclamation. The pre-solicitation opportunity involves the construction of pumping plants 2 and 3 as part of the New Mexico Unit of the Navajo-Gallup Water Supply Project. While the attached file is a geologic drawing and data document, the related federal contract opportunity indicates the Bureau of Reclamation is seeking offers for the construction of the specified pumping plants with no defined response date or award timing provided.

Geologic standards and definitions used for rock quality and rock discontinuities are based on Bureau of Reclamation Engineering

Geology Field Manual and drawing numbers 40-D-6493 and 40-D-6499.

Soil classification and descriptions are based on the Unified Soil

Classification System (USCS) and Bureau of Reclamation procedures and guidelines as described in Geotechnical Branch Training Manuals Nos. 4, 5, 6, and Designations USBR 5000 (laboratory classification) and USBR

5005 (visual classification). These procedures are similar to ASTM

D2487-11 and ASTM D2488-09A respectively.

Interpretations shown on geologic profiles are based on Test Pit, Drill

Hole, outcrop, and field mapping data. Interpretations suggest general trends between data points and do not depict localized irregularities.

For the entire description of material, drilling or excavation method and conditions, exact locations of the hole, etc., see complete log.

(dashed where projected)

Quaternary Alluvium

Quaternary alluvium deposits overlie bedrock at the Pumping Plant 2 Site. Observed thickness ranges from 0.4 to

3.3 feet. Visual soil classifications include Sandy Silt s(ML), Silt with Sand (ML)s, Clayey Sand (SC), Sandy Lean Clay s(CL), and Lean Clay (CL). For more detail, see each specific geologic log. Quaternary Alluvium is used to describe all unconsolidated surficial deposits regardless of origin. The alluvium is derived from a variety of sources including eolian and alluvial deposition as well as weathering and decomposition of in-place claystone, and shale bedrock.

Cretaceous Mancos Shale

The upper member of the Mancos Shale consists of interbedded fine-grained, mixed clastic laminations to thin beds of claystone and shale. Bedding planes are near horizontal and contacts between shale and claystone can be gradational. The shale is calcareous, sandy, fissile, light to dark gray, light to dark brown to black in color and banded or mottled in places. The shale ranges from moderately soft (H5) to hard (H3) and decomposed (W9) to slightly weathered (W3). The claystone is light to dark brown, sandy and laminated to thinly bedded. The claystone ranges from very soft (H7) to moderately soft (H5) and very intensely weathered (W8) to moderately weathered (W5). The claystone is friable and easily separates on bedding planes, slakes rapidly in water, and exhibits iron and manganese oxide staining.

The claystone is carbonaceous, contains calcium carbonate, mica and has thin to moderately thick gypsum infilling in some joints. Backhoe test pits generally reached refusal after excavating 2-to-4 feet into Mancos Shale (Km). Shale was generally recovered as 2-to-10 inch subangular, flat fragments, depending on hardness and weathering.

GENERAL GEOLOGIC LEGEND

STRATIGRAPHY

GEOLOGIC EXPLANATION GENERAL GEOLOGIC NOTES

Proposed Drill Hole location (incomplete) with identification number

Drill Hole location with identification number

Test Pit location with Identification number

Geologic Unit Contact

Dashed where approximate

Queried where inferred

Geologic standards and definitions used for rock quality and rock discontinuities are based on Bureau of Reclamation Engineering Geology Field Manual and drawing numbers 40-D-6493 and 40-D-6499.

Soil classification and descriptions are based on the Unified Soil Classification System (USCS) and Bureau of Reclamation procedures and guidelines as described in Geotechnical Branch Training Manuals Nos. 4, 5, 6, and Designations USBR 5000 (laboratory classification) and USBR 5005 (visual classification). These procedures are similar to ASTM D2487-11 and ASTM D2488-09A respectively.

Interpretations shown on geologic profiles are based on Test Pit, Drill Hole, outcrop, and field mapping data. Interpretations suggest general trends between data points and do not depict localized irregularities.

For the entire description of material, drilling or excavation method and conditions, exact locations of the hole, etc., see complete log.

BEDROCK ABBREVIATIONS:

SS - SANDSTONE

SH - SHALE

CLSTNE - CLAYSTONE

Drill Hole or Test Pit on profile (dashed where projected)

Quaternary Alluvium Quaternary alluvium deposits overlie bedrock at the investigation site of Pumping Plant 3.

Alluvial soils consist primarily of Silty Sand (SM). For more detail, see each specific geologic log. The alluvium is derived from a variety of sources including eolian and alluvial deposition as well as weathering and decomposition of in-place, sandstone bedrock.

Quaternary Alluvium is used to describe all surficial deposits regardless of origin.

Cretaceous Point Lookout Sandstone The Point Lookout Sandstone consists predominately of light brown, gray, or brownish orange, fine grained sandstone with very minor interbeds and lenses of claystone and shale.

The sandstone is moderately soft (H5) to hard (H3), slightly weathered (W3), to moderately weathered (W5), thinly to massively bedded, and has a variable reaction with HCl. It often contains calcite and gypsum veins, and iron and manganese oxide staining. The claystone and shale are generally dark brown to grayish orange, soft (H6) to very soft (H7), and moderately to intensely weathered (W6) and thinly to moderately bedded. The beds and lenses are laterally discontinuous and appear to eventually pinch out along the margins.

They usually have no reaction with HCl and contain gypsum veins and iron oxide staining.

Outcrops throughout the Pumping plant 3 site form knobs and ridges which consist of very thickly bedded, hard (H3) sandstone, dipping around 30° to the east.

2.8 to 6.2 ft SHALE: Light to dark brown color. Moderately soft (H5) and moderately weathered (W5). Laminated to thinly bedded. Bedding dips near horizontal. Easily separates on bedding planes. Unfractured (FD0) with mechanical breaks and bedding plane separation throughout core. Very soft (H7) claystone interbeds. Easily separates on bedding planes.

Weak reaction with HCl.

LAB TEST DATA: Test interval 4.0 to 5.5 ft; 81.9% fines, 18.1% sand, PI= 8.2, LL= 28.5, SpG= 2.65, moisture= 5.1%; Laboratory classification is Lean Clay with Sand (CL)s. One, quart-sized zip lock bag sample was taken from the SPT interval, representative of 1.0 ft length of the sample interval. SPT met refusal after 50 blows.
