The existing system, designed per NFPA 13D and 13R standards, includes ionization detectors for HVAC fire detection with manual reset features that shut down air handling units and activate the building fire alarm when triggered.

The contractor must submit materials submittals, an Accident Prevention Plan, Quality Control Plan, Construction Schedule (within 10 calendar days of Notice to Proceed), and Operations and Maintenance Manuals at least 15 working days before final inspection. Work may not be performed during holidays, weekends, or between 6:00 PM and 7:00 AM without written approval from the Contracting Officer. The contractor must maintain a Project Supervisor/Superintendent on-site daily, provide temporary sanitary facilities and telephone service, implement fire protection measures complying with NFPA 241, obtain temporary field office space within the staging area, and comply with environmental regulations and Red Flag Warnings. PROJECT

TATANKA HOTSHOTS BASE FIRE ALARM UPGRADES

GENERAL INFORMATION

1.0 SCOPE OF WORK

Work for this project requires the Contractor to be responsible for supplying all design, labor, materials, equipment, miscellaneous items, freight and delivery for the removal and replacement of the fire alarm system including fire alarm panel, pull stations, detection devices, notification devices, and supervisory devices; provide associated ceiling tile removal and reinstallation, patching, painting, electrical, and communication cabling. Work also includes providing for on-going fire alarm monitoring.

The Tatanka Hotshots Base is located at 12266 Tatanka Drive, Custer, Custer County, South Dakota, 57730.

The Tatanka Hotshots Base hosts two buildings which were both constructed in 2002: The Tatanka Hotshots Quarters is a 6,300 gross square foot (gsf) single level building.

2.0 BACKGROUND

The Fire Sprinkler system was designed for Dwelling Units per NFPA 13D and constructed in 2001-2002. The sprinkler head locations and types were part of the original design. Area and densities were designed to conform to NFPA 13R.

A. The original design Sequence of Operations of the Sprinkler System is as follows:

1. The entire piping system above the air and water valve shall be charged with air. Gages will indicate the pressure.

2. A small air compressor will maintain the required pressure, operating off a pressure switch. The compressor will recharge the system if very small leaks occur.

3. When the air pressure in the system reaches a preset pressure, before the pump is actually started, an alarm will be sounded indicating low air pressure.

4. If the pressure continues to drop, as it would if a sprinkler head is open, a pressure switch will sense the low pressure and start the fire pump, the air and water valve will open and supply water to the open sprinkler head.

5. A flow switch will sense the flow and activate the phone dialer, alerting the local fire department and the person so designated.

B. HVAC System Fire Detection original design information:

1. The original system includes ionization detectors for the air handling system. One detector for each unit is located in the return air stream prior to being diluted by outside air. When fire detector is activated, the unit shall be shut down and the building fire alarm system activated. Ionization detectors shall have manual reset feature.

2. Room ionization detectors shall be wired to shut down all air handling units when activated.

3. Smoke ionization detectors shall shut down air handling units, close dampers, and activate building fire alarm systems.

The elevation at the site is approximately 5,600 feet above mean sea level. The site generally experiences moderate snowfalls beginning in November and ending in March or April. The average temperature is 70 ℉ in July and 25° F in February. Access to the project site is open year around. The building will be occupied by Government Personnel during the period of performance.
