About this file

This document outlines specifications for a federal contract solicitation seeking a stationary electric laboratory thresher. The solicitation is issued by the US Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service Plains Area on behalf of the Morris ARS Soil Management Unit. The thresher must be suitable for threshing a variety of crops including pennycress, camelina, flax, cuphea, safflower, dry beans, chickpeas, soybeans, sunflowers, and corn. It must include multiple concave sieve options for seed sizes from pennycress to garbanzo beans, adjustable wind speed, variable threshing cylinder speed between 100-1200 rpm, electric power, separate seed and chaff collection bins, a straw outlet, and an emergency off switch. Delivery within one year to the USDA-ARS North Central Soil Conservation Research Lab in Morris, Minnesota is required.

Specifications Stationary Electric Laboratory Thresher

GENERAL INFORMATION

1.0 Scope of Work:

Provide a thresher with variable drum rotation speed, wind, and adaptable screen sizes to thresh seed from variable crops like dry bean and chickpea which require slow drum speed to reduce damage and splits.

2.0 Background:

The Morris ARS Soil Management Unit conducts research on novel year-round cropping systems that combine conventional and alternative agricultural practices to achieve net-zero agriculture. Alternative crops are an important component to diversifying and intensifying agronomic crop rotations. These crops vary in seed size and seed delicacy. Threshing is required to separate seed from chaff in order to assess yield and quality components of the different crops. A thresher with variable drum rotation speed, wind, and adaptable screen sizes is required to thresh seed from variable crops like dry bean and chickpea which require slow drum speed to reduce damage and splits. Because of the multiple different crops we work with a thresher with a single speed and screen size does not service the needs of the research. This equipment will allow for successful post-harvest processing of yield samples with more efficient separation of chaff from seed and minimized seed loss and damage thereby improving the quality of research data and worker safety while also reducing labor and time requirements.
