About this file

This is a Specifications document for a procurement of a high-humidity walk-in plant growth and inoculation chamber by the USDA-ARS. The USDA-ARS requires a walk-in environmental room to conduct plant pathogen infection experiments, with delivery expected by July 1, 2026, and installation and familiarization services to be completed by October 1, 2026. The specified equipment is a Percival walk-in room (MPR-912L1SW) or equal, with interior space exceeding 50 square feet and exterior dimensions not exceeding 108" W x 144" D x 97" H. The room must maintain humidity at or above 80% relative humidity with lights on and approximately 95% RH with lights off, operate within a temperature range of 10 to 40°C, include integrated or compatible misting capabilities, and feature dimmable lighting capable of maintaining 1000 μmoles/m²/s at 6 inches with dimming adjustments in 1% increments from 10% to 100%.

The vendor is responsible for all associated travel costs for installation and on-site familiarization, and installation must be included in the quoted price. Delivery location is Russell Labs, 1630 Linden Drive, Madison, Wisconsin 53706. Installation must occur during regular business hours (8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.), Monday through Friday. No government-furnished equipment, key personnel requirements, data rights, or Section 508 accessibility standards apply to this procurement.

Specifications Project: High humidity walk-in plant growth and inoculation chamber

GENERAL INFORMATION

1.0 Scope of Work: The UDSA-ARS is requesting quotes for purchase of a high-humidity environmental room for plant growth and microbial inoculations.

2.0 Background: The USDA-ARS will use this room to mimic the proper environments needed for infection of various plant pathogens. This includes maintaining high humidity (above 90%RH with lights off) and a range of temperatures between 15C and 40C. The room must be large enough to hold dozens of whole plants of various sizes. Lighting must be available to maintain normal growth of the plants during the inoculation time periods (typically up to 14 days).

CONTRACTOR REQUIREMENTS

3.0 Technical Requirements/Tasks: In order to carry out experiments to test plants for resistance or susceptibility to various plant pathogens, we require a space that can maintain relative humidity at or above 95% for an extended period of time (up to several days). Temperature range must be between 15 and 40C. Space must occupy a footprint of about 12ft X 10ft at a height of about 8ft. Lighting must be 1000 umoles/m2/s at 6 inches and dimmable in 1% increments between 10% and 100%.

Brand name or equal:

Percival walk-in room MPR-912L1SW

Walk-in plant growth room must include:

• More than 50 sq. ft. of interior space with exterior dimensions not to exceed 108” W x 144” D x 97” H.

• The room must maintain humidity at, or above, 80% RH with lights on and ~95% RH with lights off.

• The room must be compatible with, or have integrated, misting capabilities.

• The growth room must also contain lighting sufficient to grow plants in a temperature range between 10 and 40˚C with the lights on and allow for multiple temperature offsets for accurate temperature ramping during daytime/nighttime transitions.

• Lighting must maintain an intensity of 1000 µmoles/m2/s at 6” and have a dimming range of 10% - 100% in 1% increments.

• These conditions are meant to replicate the environmental conditions needed to infect plants with microbial pathogens that require high humidity and a cool environment.
