Reasonably Close Conformity. Unless working tolerances are specified, all work performed and materials furnished shall be in reasonably close conformity with lines, grades, cross sections, dimensions, and material requirements shown on the drawings, indicated in the specifications, or designated on the ground. "Reasonably close conformity" is compliance with reasonable and customary manufacturing and construction tolerances.
Roadway. The portion of the road within the limits of excavation and embankment, including slope rounding.
Schedule of Items. A schedule in the contract that contains a listing and description of construction items, quantities, units of measure, methods of measurement, unit price, and amount.

Borrow backfill material and haul if needed is incidental to this work. Rock hammered/blasting excavation may be needed and is considered incidental to this work.
1.2 - Related Sections
02232 – Aggregate Base Course
1.3 - Material Classification
Material to be excavated is unclassified. Contractor is advised to classify the material to their satisfaction.
1.4 – Approvals Required
Excavation: Notify Engineer when excavation is completed. Do not place concrete, block, tanks or backfill until the excavation is approved by the Engineer.
Backfill: Do not place backfill until construction of the structure to be backfilled against is approved by the Engineer.
1.5 – Applicable Codes
Operations shall be in compliance with the requirements and restrictions of OSHA, the Arizona Occupational Safety and Health Code, and the Workman’s Compensation Board.
2.1 - Backfill Materials
02220-33
Backfill materials shall be readily compactable, excavated material free of frozen or organic material, highly plastic clay or other objectionable material and shall contain no lumps or rock larger than 3 inches.
All fill dirt required for the building shall be examined by the Engineer to ensure that it is of low swell potential and free of organic or otherwise deleterious material.
2.2 - Water
Water shall be reasonably clean and free of injurious substances.
2.3 - Borrow
Borrow backfill material shall conform to Backfill for Buildings/Structures and 02224 – Excavation, Embankment and Backfill. Borrow material will be available from commercial sources.
3.1 - Excavation
Clearing and grubbing of areas to be excavated shall conform to 02102 – Clearing and Grubbing. No clearing or grubbing work shall be done without prior approval of the Engineer.
The Contractor is responsible for ensuring that excavation activities do not damage existing structures and improvements.
Excavate sub-soil in accordance with lines and levels required for construction of the work, including space for forms, bracing and shoring, and to permit inspection. All excavation of every description and of whatever substances encountered shall be performed to the depth needed for installation of the vaults and bedding material per staked finished grade elevations. Undercutting will not be permitted unless approved by the Engineer.
Trim any roots flush with the walls.
The contractor should expect to encounter some rock during excavation activities.
3.2 – Excavated Material
Pile topsoil separately from underlying material. All material shall be piled in an orderly manner with a sufficient distance from the banks of the excavation to avoid overloading and to prevent slides or cave-ins.
Rocks too large to be incorporated into backfill shall be relocated to locations on site as approved by the Engineer.
No excavated material shall be placed in lakes or live streams.
All suitable excavated materials shall be used as backfill. All excavated materials not required or unsuitable for backfill shall be relocated to onsite as directed by the Engineer.
3.3 – Over-excavation
When material at the maximum depth of excavation is soft or otherwise unsuitable for the construction intended, the unsuitable material shall be removed, and the excavation restored to grade by backfilling with an approved borrow backfill material.
Inadvertent excavation below specified grades in areas where material is suitable for the construction intended shall be handled as described above at no cost to the Government.
3.4 – Wet Excavation
Prevent surface water from entering the excavation.
If groundwater is encountered during excavation for structures, notify the Engineer immediately.
Remove standing water from the excavation prior to backfilling.
3.5 – Blasted/Rock Hammered Excavation
Material determined to be unrippable may be rock hammered or blasted with explosives when approved by the Engineer.
3.6 – Backsloping, Sheeting and Shoring
Whenever depth of excavation exceeds 5 feet, the surface shall be sloped back at a 1-1/2 to 1 slope or the excavation shall be shored. Backsloping will be allowed only upon prior written approval by the Engineer.
Remove all shoring and sheeting when construction is completed. Withdraw shoring in such a manner as to prevent walls from caving in while backfilling.
3.7 - Backfill
Prior to backfilling, clean trash and debris from excavation.
Backfill excavations as promptly as work permits, but not until completion of the following:
1. Acceptance of construction below finish grade including, where applicable, damp proofing, waterproofing, and perimeter insulation.
2. Inspection, testing, approval, and recording locations of underground utilities have been performed and recorded.
3. Obtaining approval from Engineer.
Fill shall be wetted and thoroughly mixed in order to achieve optimum moisture content, +/- 2 percent. Fill and backfill adjacent to structural walls shall be placed in 6-inch lifts and compacted uniformly throughout its entire depth.
Heavy equipment for spreading and compacting backfill shall not be operated closer to foundation than a distance equal to the depth to the top of backfill for footings; the area remaining shall be compacted by power-driven hand tampers suitable for the material being compacted. Backfilling operations shall not cause a foundation to become "point loaded."
General backfill shall be placed in horizontal layers not exceeding 6 inches (loose measure) and compacted. Each embankment layer shall be leveled and smoothed before compaction and placement of subsequent layers.
Finished surfaces shall be reasonably smooth, compacted, and shall drain without ponding.
3.8 - Embankment

Finished slopes shall be left in a roughened condition to facilitate vegetative growth.
Loose rock, debris, and other loose material greater than 6” in diameter, shall be removed from the slope.
This work is incidental to other items in the contract and direct and separate payment
