MORTAR

1.0 GENERAL

1.1 Summary

1.1.1 Scope of Specification

This specification includes but does not necessarily limit materials and labor to furnish, unload, store, and install Mortar for a complete, operational system.

1.1.2 Related Specifications

The following specifications prescribe items of related Work:

Referenced publications within this specification shall be the latest revision, unless otherwise specified; and applicable parts of the referenced publications shall become a part of this specification as if fully included.

1.2.1 ASTM (American Society for Testing and Materials)

1.3 Submittals: Submit according to the Statement of Work (SOW)

1.3.1 Certification

Certify the percentage of free alkali in Portland cement to be used.

1.3.2 Sample

Submit cured (28-day) sample of mortar to the Engineer for approval.

1.3.3 Manufacturer's Data

Submit copies of Manufacturer's published data for each type mortar furnished to the Engineer for review. Include mixing, handling, and storage instructions.

1.3 Delivery and Storage

1.3.1 Delivery

Deliver materials and products in Manufacturer's original, unopened packages. Clearly identify each package with contents, and Manufacturer's name and address.

1.3.2 Storage

Store and handle materials and products in Manufacturer's original, unopened packages so as to prevent damage caused by vandalism, weather, or work performed under this specification or by other trades.

2.0 PRODUCTS

2.1 Materials

2.1.1 Mortar: ASTM C270

2.1.1.1 Portland Cement

ASTM C150, Type I, except that Type III may be used for cold weather protection. In addition, Portland cement used for exterior mortar shall contain not more than 0.1 percent water soluble (free) alkali in accordance with ASTM C114.

2.1.1.2 Masonry Cement

ASTM C91.

2.1.1.3 Lime Putty

Hydrated Lime: ASTM C207, Type S.

Lime Paste: Make from hydrated lime.

2.1.1.4 Sand

ASTM C144. Sand for mortar shall also pass No. 16 sieve, with 10 percent passing a No. 100 sieve.

Use a single supply stock pile from a single supply source for all sand.

2.1.1.5 Water

Clean and potable, free of deleterious amounts of acids, salts, or organic material.

2.1.1.6 Antifreeze or Accelerating Compounds

Do not add antifreeze or accelerating compounds to the mortar. Conform to Brick Institute of America recommendations for cold weather masonry.

2.2 Aggregate

2.2.1.1 Fine Aggregate: ASTM C404.

2.3 Mixes

2.3.3 Mixing

Mix materials in mechanical batch mixer with water quantity consistent with workability to provide maximum bond strength and impermeability to moisture. Measure materials by volume in accurately calibrated containers. Measurement by shovel count is prohibited.

3.0 EXECUTION

3.1 Installation

3.1.1 Mortar Types

Use mortar in each location of the type recommended in ASTM C270 and as follows:

3.1.2.1 Type N: Use for interior masonry partitions.

3.1.3 General

3.1.3.1 Conform to cold weather procedures as recommended by the Brick Institute of America.

3.1.3.2 Retemper mortar stiffened by evaporation by mixing in additional water when required. Mortar that has taken initial set shall not be tempered for re-use.

3.1.3.3 Mortar shall not be tempered more than 2 times within allowable time of mortar use: (see Item 4).

3.1.3.4 Use mortar within 2-1/2 hours of initial mixing.

3.1.3.5 Discard mortar after initial set has taken place.

3.1.3.6 Mortar boards shall be scraped clean and flushed with clean water before re-use where mortar has been allowed to take initial set.

3.1.3.7 Set interior masonry walls in masonry cement mortar.

3.1.3.8 Set exterior concrete block walls in masonry cement or cement lime mortar.

2.2 Fabrication

2.2.1 Galvanize metal accessories in accordance with ASTM A153, Class B-2, or with ASTM A116, Class 3.

3.0 EXECUTION

3.1 Installation

3.1.1 General

3.1.1.1 Do not anchor, tie, or otherwise prevent independent vertical movement of masonry walls over thickened slabs that intersect masonry walls over grade beams.

3.1.1.2 Place reinforcing at 16 inches o.c. (on center) vertically, unless otherwise shown or specified. Space wall ties at 12" spacing.

3.1.1.3 Interrupt joint reinforcing at control and expansion joints.

3.1.2.1 Control Joint Spacing - If location of control joints is not shown, place vertical joints spaced not to exceed 35 feet o.c. for concrete masonry wythes if reinforced, or 30 feet o.c. if not reinforced, and as follows:

Set in masonry where shown or called for on drawings and specifications, positioned to maintain alignment during grouting.

1.3 SUBMITTALS

A. Submittals for Review: Submit according to the Statement of Work (SOW).

1. Product Data: Provide information on concrete unit masonry, brick, and reinforcing and anchors including sizes, profiles, materials, and finishes of each.

2. Samples: Provide Brick samples in quantities showing full color and texture range.

1.4 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Installer Qualifications: Minimum 5 years experience in work of this Section.

B. Perform Work in accordance with TMS 402 and 602.

1.5 DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING

A. Store masonry off ground; prevent contact with materials that could cause staining or damage.

B. Protect reinforcement and anchors from corrosion.

1.6 PROJECT CONDITIONS

A. Environmental Requirements:

1. Hot weather requirements: If ambient temperature is over 95 degrees F or relative humidity is less than 50 percent, protect from direct sun and wind exposure for minimum 48 hours after installation.

2. Cold weather requirements: Do not use frozen materials or build on frozen work.

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.1 MANUFACTURERS

2.2 MATERIALS

1. ASTM C90, hollow load bearing type, normal weight.

2. Size: Nominally 8 inches high x 16 inches long x thickness indicated.

3. Special shapes: Lintels, Bond beams.

2.3 ACCESSORIES

A. Mortar: Specified in Section 04100.

B. Single Wythe Joint Reinforcement:

1. Ladder type; ASTM A951, hot-dip galvanized steel wire, 9 gage side rods with 9 gage cross ties.

2. Width: Nominal wall thickness less 1-1/2 inches.

3. Corner and tee fittings: Type to match reinforcement.

C. Reinforcing Bars:

1. ASTM A615/A615M, deformed billet steel, Grade 60.

3.1 PREPARATION

A. Remove dirt, loose rust, and other foreign matter from reinforcement and anchors.

3.2 INSTALLATION

A. Establish lines, levels and courses indicated. Protect from displacement.

B. Maintain masonry courses to uniform dimensions. Form horizontal and vertical joints of uniform thickness.

C. Lay concrete masonry in running bond. Course one masonry unit and one mortar joint to equal 8 inches.

D. Lay masonry plumb and level. Do not adjust masonry units after mortar has set.

E. Lay solid masonry units in full mortar bed, with full head joints. Lay hollow masonry units with face shell bedding on head and bed joints.

F. Machine cut masonry with straight cuts and clean edges; prevent oversized or undersized joints. Discard damaged units. Do not expose cut cells.

G. When joining fresh masonry to partially set masonry, remove loose masonry and mortar;

clean and lightly wet exposed surface of set masonry.

H. Stop horizontal runs by racking back normal bond unit in each course. Toothing not permitted.

I. Horizontal Reinforcement:

1. Place reinforcement at maximum 16 inches on center vertically, at topmost course, and at first two courses above and below openings.

2. Extend minimum 24 inches each side of openings.

3. Center reinforcing in wall.

4. Lap ends 6 inches minimum; use fabricated tee and corner fittings at corners and intersections.

J. Finishing Mortar Joints:

1. Exposed locations: Tool joints to concave profile.

2. Concealed locations: Cut joints flush.

K. Reinforcing Bars:

1. Position reinforcing accurately and hold securely in place to prevent displacement.

Maintain minimum 1 inch space between masonry and reinforcing.

L. Install mortar dropping control continuously in cavities above flashings.

M. Installation Tolerances; Maximum variation from:

1. Alignment face to face of adjacent units: Plus or minus 1/8 inch.

2. Vertical alignment of head joints: Plus or minus 1/2 inch in 10 feet.

3. True plane of wall: Plus or minus 1/4 inch in 10 feet and 1/2 inch in 20 feet or more.

4. Plumb: Plus or minus 1/4 inch in 10 feet noncumulative; 1/2 inch in 20 feet or more.

5. Level coursing: Plus or minus 1/8 inch in 3 feet; 1/4 inch in 15 feet; 1/2 inch in 30 feet.

6. Joint thickness: Plus or minus 1/8 inch.

7. Cross sectional thickness of walls: Plus or minus 1/4 inch.

3.3 CLEANING

A. Protect adjacent and underlying surfaces.

B. Apply masonry cleaner in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.

C. Thoroughly rinse surfaces with clean water after completion of cleaning; remove all traces of cleaning solution.

PART 1 – GENERAL

1.1 SUMMARY

2.2 DELIVERY

2.3 WARRANTY

2.4 PRODUCTS - GENERAL

A. Provide each product from one manufacturer.

B. Sustainable Construction Requirements:

1. Steel Components Recycled Content: 30 percent total recycled content, minimum.

2.5 VAULT DOOR

A. Fed. Spec. AA-D-600, Class 5-V, Type IIR (right open swing), without optical device, Style K, (Key change combination lock).

1. Approved Products: QPL AA-D-600 listed.

B. Door Stop: Wall type to suit application.

2.6 COMBINATION LOCK

A. Fed. Spec. FF-L-2937 mechanical dial lock will be installed according to FL-L-2937 for

Class 5-A applications.

2.7 DAY GATE

A. Self-closing metal construction with expanded mesh or solid bars infill, minimum 3.038 mm (0.12 inch) steel.

1. Finish: Match vault door and frame.

B. Hardware: Heavy duty hinges.

C. Locking: Automatic, key controlled from vault exterior, and thumb-turn latch release accessible from vault interior, only.

1. Keying: Match door hardware cylinder keying.

2.8 FINISHES

A. Steel Paint Finish:

1. Powder-Coat Finish: Manufacturer's standard two-coat finish system consisting of the following:

a. One coat primer.

b. One coat thermosetting topcoat.

c. Dry-film Thickness: 0.05 mm (2 mils) minimum.

d. Color: Refer to Section 09 06 00, SCHEDULE FOR FINISHES.

PART 3 – EXECUTION

3.1 PREPARATION

A. Examine and verify substrate suitability for product installation.

1. Verify rough opening is properly sized and located.

2. Verify wall construction will support vault and day gate door weight.

3. Verify factory-applied lock seal is unbroken.

a. Remove key change and combination changing instructions from packaging and deliver to Contracting Officer's Representative, in manufacturer's original, unopened packaging.

4. Obtain signed receipt.

B. Protect existing construction and completed work from damage.

3.2 INSTALLATION - GENERAL

A. Install products according to manufacturer's instructions and approved submittal

drawings.

1. When manufacturer's instructions deviate from specifications, submit proposed resolution for Contracting Officer's Representative consideration.

B. Hang vault door and day gate plumb and level.

C. Securely attach vault door and day gate to wall construction.

D. Engage locksmith to reset lock combination in presence of Contracting Officer's

Representative or VA locksmith.

E. Adjust vault door and day gate for smooth operation and proper locking.

1. Ensure vault door and day gate remain stationary when set anywhere within full swing path.

3.3 CLEANING

A. Clean exposed vault door and day gate surfaces. Remove contaminants and stains.

3.4 PROTECTION

A. Protect vault door and day gate from construction operations.

B. Remove protective materials immediately before acceptance.

C. Repair damage.
