About this file

This file is a detailed set of engineering drawings for a Bureau of Land Management (BLM) road maintenance project in Missoula and Granite Counties, Montana. The project involves maintenance work on approximately 22 miles of BLM roads, specifically roads 4601 Rattler Gulch, 4608 Mulkey Gulch, and adjacent roads. The comprehensive set of drawings includes specifications for roadway brushing, road reconditioning, culvert installation, drainage excavation, sediment traps, and kiosk installation.

Key technical details include selective clearing and grubbing within 5 feet of roadways, drainage improvements with culvert replacements and installations, road surface reconditioning using aggregate, constructing drainage dips, and installing sediment traps. The project requires precise road work such as outsloping roads, constructing turnouts, removing and replacing minor culverts, and installing government-furnished informational kiosks. The contractor will have 90 calendar days to complete the work, with specific requirements for vegetation removal, drainage management, and road surface restoration. The drawings provide extensive technical guidance on road construction methods, slope management, and environmental considerations specific to the Montana terrain.

SELECTIVE CLEARING AND GRUBBING NOTES

1. CUT ALL CONIFERS, HARDWOODS AND BRUSH LESS THAN 6 INCHES IN DIAMETER, AT THE

POINT OF CUT, WITHIN 5 FEET OF ROADWAY OR THE BOTTOM OF THE DITCH. EXISTING

ROADWAY WIDTHS INCLUDE TURNOUTS AND ALL AS BUILT CURVE AND FILL WIDENING. EDGE

OF ROAD WHERE DITCH IS NOT PRESENT EXTENDS TO THE TOE OF THE CUT SLOPE. GRUB

ALL STUMPS WITHIN THE ROADBED AND DITCH LINE. DO NOT GRUB TREES ON THE CUT AND

FILL SLOPES.

2. THE AREA OF SIGHT DISTANCE CLEARING WILL BE FROM THE ROADSIDE CLEARING LIMIT TO

A LINE OF SIGHT BETWEEN THE BEGINNING AND ENDING STATIONS MARKED ON THE

GROUND. CONIFERS WITHIN THIS AREA SHALL BE THINNED TO APPROXIMATELY A 2 FOOT

TRUNK SPACING, EXCEPT WHERE MARKED WITH PAINT OR FLAGGING FOR REMOVAL TO AN

ALTERNATE SPACING. ALL HARDWOODS AND BRUSH WITHIN THERE LIMITS SHALL BE

REMOVED.

3. BRANCHES ON REMAINING CONIFERS SHALL BE TRIMMED FROM GROUND LEVEL TO A

CLEARING HEIGHT LIMIT 14 FEET ABOVE THE ROADBED OR TO A LIMIT OF 60% OF THE TREE'S

HEIGHT, WHICHEVER IS LESS. LIMBS OF VEGETATION SHALL BE CUT SO AS NOT TO

PROTRUDE WITHIN THE CLEARING (ROADSIDE AND HEIGHT) LIMITS. DOWNED TREES AND JILL

POKES EXTENDING INTO THE BRUSHING LIMITS WILL BE CUT OFF AT THE TOP OF THE CUT,

AND DISPOSED OF IN ACCORDANCE WITH SPECIFICATIONS.

4. DISPOSAL OF VEGETATION:

1.1. BRUSH AND SLASH DISPOSE PER SECTION 203.05 (g) CHIPPING OR (j) REMOVAL TO DESIGNATED LOCATION, STUMPS PER METHOD ( j ) REMOVAL TO DESIGNATED LOCATION.

LOCATION TO BE DESIGNATED WITHIN 0.50 MILE.

1.2. NON-SAW LOGS SHALL BE PROPERTY OF CONTRACTOR OR DISPOSED BY 203.05 (g) CHIPPING AND (j) REMOVAL TO DESIGNATED LOCATIONS.

1.3. SAWLOG TO BE DECKED IN DESIGNATED LOCATION FOR OPTIONAL SMALL SALE TO

CONTRACTOR OUTSIDE OF THIS CONTRACT.
