CRACK SEAL

MT-02878-1

SECTION MT-02878

1.01 SUMMARY:

A. Description: Furnishing labor, equipment, supplies, and materials to evaluate, route, clean, and seal the transverse and longitudinal cracks in the paved surface with the specified sealant at each work location. Contracting Officer Representative shall approve of all pavement cracks for seal work. Work includes crack sealing any joints between asphalt and concrete pavements (i.e. the asphalt-curb interface).

1. Contractor to submit manufacturer’s printed Product Data Sheet.

B. Certification: The Contractor shall submit the Manufacturer’s Certificate of Compliance for all Contractor supplied materials.

1.03 SITE CONDITIONS:

A. Environmental Requirements:

1. Apply sealant only to clean, dry, and properly prepared cracks and joints.

2. At ambient temperatures below 40 degrees Fahrenheit, use a hot compressed air lance to achieve clean, dry, and warm space for sealant installation.

B. Requirements:

1. Do not perform crack seal work if the weather forecast includes a probability of precipitation greater than 45 percent within the intended schedule of operations for the day. Regardless of the weather forecast, crack seal work may be suspended if impending adverse weather conditions occur in the vicinity of the work.

MT-02878-2

A. Crack Sealant: Use sealant meeting the following ASTM D 5167 specifications.

Cone Penetration, 77°F (25°C), dmm (ASTM D5329) 100-150 Cone Penetration 0°F (-18°C), dmm (ASTM D5329 modified) 25 min Flow, 140°F (60°C) 5h (ASTM D5329) 10 mm max.

Resilience, (ASTM D5329) 30 – 60% Bond, -20°F (-29°C), 200% ext. (ASTM D5329) Pass 3 cycles Recommended Pour Temperature 380°F (193°C) Safe Heating Temperature 410°F (210°C) Asphalt Compatibility (ASTM D5329) Pass

Three known supplier products meeting these specifications are (for reference):

Crafco 522 Maxwell Elastoflex 72 Crackfiller Mfg. CMC-101-ELT-B4135

B. The kettle to be used must have constant agitation any time material is over 300 degrees

Fahrenheit. The kettle must have temperature-monitoring capabilities.

C. Roofing kettles or other direct fired melters are not acceptable for these materials.

A. Work Prior To Cleaning Pavement:

1. Remove all existing concrete pindown curbs and all rubber speed bump pindowns, prior to cleaning existing pavement, as shown on drawings, and in accordance with Section MT-02745 Fog Seal.

B. Surface Evaluation: Evaluate each project location for cracks in need of sealing. Obtain

Contracting Officer Representative approval of crack sealing locations and quantities prior to performing any crack seal work. All joints between asphalt and concrete pavements are to be crack sealed.

MT-02878-3

C. Crack Preparation:

1. Routing:

a) Route all cracks between 1/8” and 1” wide.

b) Route the cracks to produce straight 1/2” to 3/4” vertical walls and 1/2” to 3/4” wide flat bottom reservoir, or to remove at least 1/2” from each side to produce vertical, intact surfaces with not loosely bonded aggregate. Width shall not exceed 1 1/2”.

c) Route when the roadway is dry

d) Remove and dispose of the routed material from the roadway before opening the roadway to traffic.

2. Cleaning:

a) Ensure the reservoir and crack are dry and free of dust, dirt, and loose materials immediately before placing backer rod or sand, if applicable, and applying the sealant.

b) Use air equipment producing at least 125 CFM and line pressure of at least 125 PSI.

D. Sealant Preparation

1. Prepare sealant in specified equipment

2. Heat sealant according to manufacturer’s Product Data Sheet and in accordance with

Manufacturer’s recommendations.

E. Surface Preparation: Immediately before application of sealant, clean surface with a side cast, self-propelled broom sweeper. All visible layers of dirt that are caked on the pavement shall be scraped off if not removed by the sweeper.

3.02 APPLICATION:

A. Sealing

1. Contractor shall install sand or backer rod in cracks 1” or more in depth and larger. In cracks that propagate to the base course, sand or backer rod can be utilized to fill the void of the crack underneath the sealant to prevent sealant from settling and causing a depression near the surface of the pavement.

2. Place sealant material within 72 hours of routing.

MT-02878-4

3. Follow the sealant manufacturer’s handling, mixing, and application temperature requirements.

4. Apply sealant, filling the reservoir flush to the top using a pressure type applicator. All “sinkers” will be refilled to achieve flush to 1/8-inch concave surface appearance.

5. Areas subject to traffic may be reopened once the Contractor determines the sealant will not track.

6. Repair or replace all seal work damaged by traffic at the Contractor’s expense.

7. Blotter material must be approved by the Contracting Officer Representative prior to beginning work.

B. Temperature Limitations

1. Do not route when the mat temperature is below 40°F.

2. Apply the sealant when the roadway surface temperature is between 40°F and 120°F.

3.03 PROTECTION

A. Due care must be taken to keep the public from entering area during the application of joint sealant.

B. Failure to follow manufacturer’s printed recommendations could result in a severe burn hazard.

A. Units: The work described in this section will be measured and paid for by the linear foot using previously determined and approved lengths of existing cracks measured at the site.

4.02 BASIS OF PAYMENT

A. Payment: Prices and payment will be full compensation for the work described in this section. Payment will be made under:
