About this file

This is a Requirements Document from NIST for Quantum Control and Measurement Electronics. The document details two full-stack, integrated systems for quantum research: a Spin Qubit System Control and Measurement System and a Quantum Current Control and Measurement System. Each system requires specific technical capabilities, including:

  • 24 DC voltage outputs with +/- 8V range and 20-bit precision
  • 4 DC coupled measurement channels with 2V range and <300 µV precision
  • 8 arbitrary waveform outputs with 1V peak-to-peak range and 1 Giga sample/sec sampling rate
  • Microwave excitation outputs up to 18 GHz with 5 dBm power
  • High-frequency I/Q inputs with local oscillation capability

Delivery is required within 90 days of award to NIST in Gaithersburg, MD, with 100% payment upon acceptance. The systems are intended to support nano- and quantum device measurements, specifically for color center transduction and quantum current standards research, with a strong emphasis on integrated, compact design and low measurement noise.

NIST Requirements Document Pomeroy – Quantum Control and Measurement Electronics

I. Background

The Atom Scale Devices Group predominantly conducts measurements of nano- and quantum devices in support of the development of quantum information technology. This acquisition is in direct support of the group’s work on the NDCD division’s color center transduction program and quantum current standards. Specifically, a new measurement laboratory featuring a milli- Kelvin temperature dilution refrigerator equipped to cool and connect color center quantum devices is being built, and a system of control and measurement electronics for these devices is needed. Additionally, an electronics system of the same functionality is required in support of the quantum current standard development so that (2) systems of the same type, but with minor difference in the minimum capability configuration are sought. As described more completely below, the electronics packages sought shall be full stack, integrated hardware and software control system intended for the measurement of silicon-based spin qubit and charge pumping devices that can provide many DC coupled control voltages with high precision, several arbitrary signal control lines at high frequencies, precision voltage measurement capability, microwave excitation and I/Q mixing capability.

II. Minimum Requirements

Overview

Two “full stack,” integrated systems, including hardware and software, to provide the necessary i) control voltage outputs, ii) current and voltage measurements, iii) arbitrary high speed control waveforms, iv) microwave “ESR” control signals and v) post-measurement signals analysis.

“Integrated system" means a system designed from scratch to accomplish the many channels of voltage output and input; it specifically does not mean a combination of commercially available, general purpose voltage sources and voltmeters, which have been integrated into a rack using interface cables and software. This requirement accomplishes the Government's needs for i) compactness, ii) ease-of-use, iii) and improved likelihood of low measurement noise.

Contract Line Items:

CLIN 0001: Qty 1 – Spin Qubit System Control and Measurement System - Full Stack integrated system, to comply with both the “System A” configuration and “Common Specifications” listed below. This line item must also include all items listed in the Overview above.

CLIN 0002: Qty 1 – Quantum Current Control and Measurement System - Full Stack integrated system, to comply with both the “System B” configuration and “Common Specifications” listed below. This line item must also include all items listed in the Overview above.

System configurations:

0001 - “System A” (CC) Unique Configuration (CLIN 0001): At least (24) type (i) “DC” type

outputs, at least (4) DC coupled type (ii) measurement channels, at least (8) type (iii) arbitrary waveform outputs, at least (2) type (iv) microwave control outputs and (2) type (v) high frequency inputs.

0002 - “System B” (QCS) Unique Configuration (CLIN 0002): At least (24) type (i) “DC” type outputs, at least (4) DC coupled type (ii) measurement channels, at least (8) type (iii) DC coupled arbitrary waveform outputs, and (3) DC coupled type (v) high frequency inputs.

Common Specifications:

The following specification are common to both systems in all aspects except the quantity of each type on input or output. Specifications for each type also apply to both systems.

Type (ii) DC Coupled Input -measurement inputs

The items under the ‘type’ headings represent the hardware we expect to come with each line item, right? The “type” part is confusing and can probably be removed. We could put a heading before these items like “Each CLIN (0001 and 0002) shall also come with the following hardware.

Pomeroy, Joshua M. (Fed) The products tend to be modular, where each of the “types” reflect a type of module, and the specifications within the type apply to that module. The system is composed of many modules selected according the quantities in system A and B to comprise the whole system.

FOB Destination means: The contractor shall pack and mark the shipment in conformance with carrier requirements, deliver the shipment in good order and condition to the point of delivery specified in the purchase order, be responsible for any loss of and/or damage to the

Crumpler, Forest T. (Fed) Are these required? If so, we should make them more structured and as prominent like the other items. Are they capabilities of the line item equipment or of the different hardware we are asking for? If they are part of the base system, they should be moved to the Common Specifications section.

Pomeroy, Joshua M. (Fed) The common specifications above are yes/no things that the hardware must have to meet our needs. This list is measurement/control functions that we want to insure are possible by utilizing the equipment set offered with an example that is has in fact been done, and not just hypothetically possible.
