About this file

This is a Statement of Requirements for the purchase and delivery of a soil scanning/mapping platform to the USDA-ARS Coastal Plains Soil, Water & Plant Research Center in Florence, South Carolina.

The government seeks to acquire a soil scanning and mapping platform capable of simultaneously measuring electrical conductivity (EC), soil organic matter (SOM), and pH. The platform must be mountable to multiple vehicle types including tractors, UTVs, and trucks, and must have the capability to map a minimum of 100 acres per day. The system is required to include real-time data viewing software and GPS integration for precise georeferenced mapping of soil variables. The platform will enable the Center to characterize key soil properties essential to agricultural research more efficiently than traditional labor-intensive sampling methods, supporting experimental design, long-term soil health monitoring, and integration with remote sensing and yield mapping tools. Delivery is required to USDA-ARS, Coastal Plains Soil, Water & Plant Research Center, 2611 West Lucas Street, Florence, SC 29501. No government-furnished items will be provided. Technical inquiries should be directed to Thomas F. Ducey at (office) 843-669-5203 x112 or (cell) 843-245-7020.

Statement of Requirements Project: Soil Scanning/Mapping Platform for electrical conductivity, organic matter, and pH

GENERAL INFORMATION

1.0 Scope of Work: Purchase and delivery of soil scanning/mapping platform for the measurement of electrical conductivity, organic matter, and pH

2.0 Background: A soil scanning and mapping platform would provide the Center with a rapid, high-resolution method for characterizing key soil properties essential to agricultural research, including electrical conductivity (EC), soil organic matter (SOM), and pH. Traditional soil sampling is labor-intensive and limited in spatial coverage, while a scanning/mapping platform would deliver continuous, georeferenced data that captures within-field variability in soil texture, moisture dynamics, carbon content, and nutrient availability. These measurements are critical for understanding soil function, interpreting field experiments, and improving the accuracy of model inputs and management recommendations

Acquiring such a platform will significantly enhance research efficiency and data quality by reducing manual sampling demands, improving the precision of soil health assessments, and enabling more detailed evaluation of management impacts such as cover cropping, tillage, and amendment applications. High-resolution EC, SOM, and pH maps strengthen experimental design, support long-term monitoring of soil health and carbon dynamics, and improve the ability to integrate soil data with remote sensing, yield mapping, and other geospatial research tools.
