SOW with Specifications for Sheep Order
Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is an important disease of livestock that is caused by foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV). The relevance of sheep as susceptible hosts capable of propagating FMD outbreaks is often overlooked, despite documented involvement of sheep as a major factor in multiple FMD epidemics. It is unknown how early or persistent FMDV infection of sheep contributes to evolution of the virus and to potential generation of novel FMDV variants. The purpose of procuring the sheep described herein is to perform 1 animal experiment in which sheep will be inoculated with one or two distinct strains of FMDV in order to understand how the viruses interact with the sheep immune systems. Sheep will be followed for up to 6 weeks after infection and samples will be collected to characterize the evolution of the viruses and changes in host factors over the course of the experiment. Infection dynamics will be characterized during the acute and persistent phases of infection.
