Description of Action:

The USDA-ARS Pecan Breeding and Genetics program in conjunction with the NCGR-Pecans and Hickories evaluates crop diversity and breeding materials in multiple orchards spanning hundreds of acres. For breeding and maintaince work, we will routinely need access to the upper canopy of trees in pecan orchards data collection, sample access, and routine observations. Safe, timely, and effective access is critical to the research projects. The large trees, some over 90 years old require a machine that can reach higher in the canopy than standard ladders, etc. The program would utilize this machine in those research endeavors.

Description of Supplies/Services:

The purchase is for a pruning tower lift, equipped with dual hydrostatic drive, 25ft platform reach, have a hydraulic sliding axle with a max. 10’ transprort width, high/low travel range, a tier 4 diesel engine, and electric over hydraulic controls. The lift would need all controls located in a fully enclosed operator platform and also the ability for high speed towing. It provides timely and effective management to orchards and field plots of the NCGR Germplasm Repository and Pecan Breeding Program.
