About this file
This document is a Salient Characteristics specification for Mobile Shelves, detailing a Mechanical Assist rolling high-density storage shelving system for the Department of the Air Force Space Command. The mobile shelving system features a steel frame with 24-inch deep shelves capable of supporting 300 lbs per shelf, a maximum overall height of 106 inches, and a floor-mounted track system designed for Storage Systems Synchro Rail. Key specifications include triple arm operating wheels with rotating hand knobs, a chain sprocket drive system that allows 1 lb of force to move up to 4,000 lbs, and safety features like color-coded visual indicators and a single safety lock button on each operating wheel hub.
The shelving units are designed with precise dimensional constraints to fit through doorways (maximum 34-inch width, 83-inch height when disassembled) and include a labeling system with 3" x 5" steel card holders. The system's drive mechanism incorporates permanently shielded and lubricated bearings, and the components feature a manufacturer's standard powder coat paint finish with end panels using High Pressure Laminate Finish (HPLF) Wilsonart laminate standards. The specification is part of a Sources Sought pre-solicitation process for the Department of the Air Force Space Command, indicating potential future procurement of these mobile shelving systems.

Salient Characteristics Mobile Shelves
Shelving Type: Mechanical Assist rolling high-density storage shelving system.
Shelf Depth: 24” Overall Shelving Unit Height (Maximum): 97” high shelving, 106” Overall height which includes shelving installed on carriages and rails.
Shelving Unit Disassembled Component Width (Maximum): 34 inches (Critical for fitting through the door. The ½ inch from the door measurement is removed for tolerance.)
Shelving Unit Disassembled Component Height (Maximum): 83 inches (Must fit through the doorway.)
Shelving Unit Frame Material: Steel Weight Capacity Per Shelf units, 48” x 24” and 72” x 24’ are rated for 300 lbs. per shelf. All rated for the intended use.
Labeling System: Each shelving range shall have 3” x5” steel card holders for labeling individual shelves or sections.
Floor-Mounted Track System: The shelving system shall be designed to operate on a floor-mounted track system that exists and originally designed for Storage Systems, Synchro Rail.
Movement Controls: Triple arm operating wheels with rotating hand knobs shall be provided on the accessible (drive) ends of shelf units, centered on the end panel, located 40 inches (1051MM) from the base of each unit to permit units to be moved to create a single aisle opening. Turning the handle transmits power through chain drive to drive wheels on each carriage.
Drive System: The system shall be designed with a positive type of mechanically assisted drive which minimizes end play, ensures there is no play in the drive handle, and that carriages will stop without drifting and includes a synchro drive which assures the front and back of each carriage are moving in perfect alignment.
The system shall include a chain sprocket drive system for each movable carriage to ensure that carriages move uniformly along the total length of travel, even with unbalanced loads.
All system components shall be selected to ensure a smooth, even movement along the entire carriage length. Drive system gearing shall be designed to permit 1 lb. of force applied to the drive handle to move a minimum of 4,000 lbs. of load.
A tensioning device shall be provided on each chain drive with provision for adjusting tension without removing end panels.
All bearings used in the drive mechanism shall be permanently shielded and lubricated.
Safety Features:
o Color-coded visual indicators shall provide verification that carriages are in a locked or unlocked mode.
o A single safety lock button, mounted on each operating wheel hub, will permit moving a carriage in either direction to create a new access aisle when pulled out (unlocked), or locking the carriage when pushed in.
Powder coat paint Finishes:
o Fabricated Metal Components And Assemblies:
Manufacturer’s standard powder coat paint finish.
End Panels will be High Pressure Laminate Finish (HPLF) Wilsonart laminate standards
