About this file
This document is a salient characteristics specification for ISO containers required under a federal contract opportunity. The requirement calls for the procurement of 24 ISO containers configured specifically for military ammunition transport and Defense Transportation System (DTS) compliance. Each container must be a standard 20-foot length by 8-foot width by 8-foot 6-inch height unit, rated for a minimum gross weight of 52,910 pounds (24,000 kilograms).
The containers must meet rigorous regulatory and standards compliance requirements, including ISO 668, ISO 1496-1, and ISO 6346 certifications, along with a valid CSC Safety Approval Plate per the International Convention for Safe Containers. They must also comply with explosives transport suitability standards under 49 CFR § 176.172 and the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code. Construction specifications require fully welded, corrosion-resistant Corten steel fabrication with standard end-opening and full-length side-opening double doors fitted with weather-tight EPDM rubber gaskets. Interior requirements include a non-sparking solid floor of marine-grade plywood or bamboo (minimum 1-1/8-inch thickness), a minimum of 16 flush-mounted heavy-duty lashing D-rings with 2,000 kilograms safe working load each, and a minimum of two passive ventilators to prevent moisture buildup. The exterior must be coated with marine-grade primer and topcoat suitable for saltwater environments to ensure durability and security.

b. Maritime Safety Compliance: Must bear a valid, affixed CSC Safety Approval Plate per the International Convention for Safe Containers (CSC), 1972.
c. Explosives Transport Suitability: Must fully meet the "Structural Serviceability" requirements defined in 49 CFR § 176.172 and the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code.
ii. Dimensions and Ratings:
a. External Dimensions (Nominal): 20 ft (Length) x 8 ft (Width) x 8 ft 6 in
(Height).
b. Maximum Gross Weight (MGW): Rated for a minimum of 52,910 lbs
(24,000 kg).
iii. Construction and Ammunition-Specific Features: The container's construction must prevent weather intrusion and mitigate spark hazards as required by military standards.
a. Primary Construction: Fabricated from fully welded, corrosion-resistant Corten steel.
b. Doors and Seals: Equipped with one set of standard end-opening double doors and a full-length set of side-opening double doors. All doors must be fitted with weather-tight EPDM rubber gaskets.
