About this file
This document is a research equipment solicitation from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Research Service for the U.S. Vegetable Laboratory in Charleston, SC. The agency seeks to purchase and deliver a freeze dryer (lyophilizer) to replace a 20-year-old, obsolete unit that is no longer reliable. The freeze dryer is critical for supporting mission-critical research projects in pathology, entomology, and plant breeding across various vegetable crop plants including peppers, cucumber, watermelon, melon, sweet potato, squashes, brassica crops, and beans.
The solicitation specifies detailed technical requirements for the freeze dryer, including a condenser maximum low temperature of -85°C, shelf temperature range from -70°C to +65°C, condenser capacity of 12 liters/24 hours, and mandatory stainless steel construction (316L) for all chambers. Electrical power requirements include 208V/230V 60Hz or 220V 50Hz single-phase configurations. The equipment procurement includes installation/startup assistance by field service personnel and a comprehensive first-year warranty covering all repairs and associated expenses. The equipment will be delivered to the laboratory's loading dock at 2700 Savannah Highway, Charleston, SC 29414.

PROJECT CONTACT PERSONS:
Provided after award.
SCOPE:
Equipment Purchase and Delivery: Freeze dryer (Lyophilizer) is to be purchased and delivered to the loading dock at USDA United States Vegetable Laboratory, 2700 Savannah Highway, Charleston, SC 29414. This machine will replace the 20-year-old freeze dryer that has become unreliable. Additionally, the current freeze dryer is obsolete, and replacement parts are no longer available from the manufacturer. This research equipment is important to all USDA USVL CRIS projects involving pathology, entomology and plant breeding for preparing samples for subsequent analyses such as nutrient content and DNA studies.
Crop Plants the Laboratory works on: The USDA United States Vegetable Laboratory works on various vegetable crop plants including peppers, cucumber, watermelon, melon, sweet-potato, squashes, brassica crops (broccoli, mustard greens, kale, collard greens), beans etc. All of these crops could be processed through the replacement freeze dryer.
Specification for the Freeze Dryer (Lyophilizer) needed at the U.S. Vegetable Laboratory to support the ongoing mission critical projects:
- The Condenser max low temperature -85C (-82C @ 50 Hz)
- The shelf temperature range should be from -70C to +65C (-67C @ 50 Hz)
- The shelf temperature control range should be -55C to +65C
- The shelf temperature uniformity should be +/- 1C.
- Condenser capacity of 12 liters/24 hours, 25 liters max capacity
- For this research equipment it is necessary that all shelves, product and condenser chambers are at least 316L and made of stainless steel.
- Hot gas defrost
- The freeze dryer should features non-CFC refrigerant gas -A minimum of three (3) Product Shelves
- Has a minimum of three usable 273mm (10.75"") X 521mm (20.5"") shelves and one radiant shelf
- The equipment has at least 4266 cm2 (4.59 ft2) of usable shelf area
- Shelf inter-distance of 102 mm (4.03"") to allow adequate space for placing samples -Can have bulk shelf configuration
Electrical Power Requirements:
208V / 230V 60Hz Single Phase
220V 50Hz Single Phase
Dryer Installation/Startup Assistance:
