PURCHASE DESCRIPTION
Brand Name or Equal: Neurostar Drill and Injection Micro-robot for Performing Intracranial Injections in Mice
National Institute for Neurological Disorders and Stroke, Cellular Neurophysiology Section
1. Statement of Need and Purpose: The National Institutes of Health (NIH) requires a brand name or equal Neurostar Drill and Injection Micro-robot automated stereotaxic injection system. This equipment will be used to perform intracranial injections and to make cranial windows into mouse brains. The experiments being perfromed will directly test the effects of alterations in neural circuitry in various animal models of Parkinson’s Disease.
2. Background Information and Objective: The NIH is an agency of the Department of
Health and Human Services and the Federal focal point for health research. Its mission is to seek fundamental knowledge about the nature and behavior of living systems and apply that knowledge to enhance health, lengthen life, and reduce illness and disability.
The National Institute for Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), which is an Institute within the NIH, seeks to reduce the burden of neurological disease through supporting and conducting basic, translational, and clinical research on the healthy and diseased nervous system, fostering the training of investigators in the basic and clinical neurosciences, and seeking better understanding, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of neurological disorders.
The NINDS Cellular Neurophysiology Section is conducting research into how basal ganglia and midbrain dopamine circuits are altered in animal models of Parkinson’s Disease. To generate the Parkinson’s disease model, NINDS will express alpha synuclein in midbrain dopamine neurons; alpha synuclein is a protein that has been associated with cell death among dopamine neurons. This injection process will involve performing intracranial injections in mice. To precisely target the midbrain dopamine neurons through manual use of an injection needle requires substantial experience and can occur with variable success between animals. However, using a robot guided injection method will allow NINDS to more consistently target its brain structures of interest. Therefore, this is an essential piece of equipment for NINDS’ experiments.
