About this file
This is a Description/Specifications document (Part I - Section C) for an IIJA-funded underground utility improvements project at the Chicago ARTCC facility in Aurora, Illinois, dated July 2024.
The project encompasses underground utility work on the north side of the Automation Wing, the southeast parking area, and the sump pump basin. General work requirements include installing temporary erosion and sediment controls, locating all utilities prior to excavation, managing soils containing trace heavy metals, and complying with OSHA confined space requirements. Demolition and excavation activities require vacuum excavation for the first eight feet and two feet below existing utilities, contractor-designed dewatering and shoring systems, temporary pumping to remove water from the basin, excavation for replacement stormwater lines and manholes, demolition of existing pavement and walks, and selective concrete cutting in specified areas. New work includes providing shop and coordination drawings for inlet systems, regrading the project area, installing/replacing below-grade stormwater lines using 10-inch HDPE and 4-inch PVC piping to connect six and three downspouts respectively, installing a dry swale with drain system, furnishing and installing precast concrete manholes (one 3-foot ID and two 3-foot ID units), replacing and redirecting floor drains with 3-inch HDPE piping, installing new pavement, curb, gutter, and concrete walkways, and installing an 8-foot ID precast concrete basin with a duplex sump pump system complete with electrical controls and Building Automation System connectivity. The contractor must furnish all materials, equipment, and labor, restore work sites to original condition upon demobilization, and bear costs for any damage caused by unauthorized actions.
