1 Introduction

This document specifies the requirements for a fit and functional replacement of the Intermediate Frequency (IF) Monopulse Receiver within the Mode Select Beacon System (Mode S) Sensor.

The Mode S sensor is a ground-based secondary radar system capable of selective and general interrogation of transponder-equipped aircraft. There are approximately 143 operational Mode S radar systems in the National Airspace System (NAS). The Mode S sensor is comprised of the Interrogator, Data Processing System (DPS), Calibration Performance Monitoring Equipment (CPME), and power distribution equipment.

The Mode S uses monopulse detection, which has the benefits of reduced interrogation rates, improved reply degarbling, and false target identification compared to sliding window detection techniques. To perform monopulse detection, the Mode S inputs Sigma and Delta antenna channels for monopulse angle detection and an Omega channel for side lobe suppression (SLS).

As the antenna rotates, interrogation replies are received from aircraft that are at an angle (left or right) to the antenna boresight (pointed direction). The antenna gains for the Sigma and Delta channels vary with the off-boresight angle, allowing an aircraft’s off-boresight angle to be determined. An aircraft’s azimuth from the Mode S sensor can then be determined with the knowledge of the direction the antenna is pointing and the off-boresight angle. See FIGURE 1 - ANTENNA RECEIVE PATTERNS.

FIGURE 1 - ANTENNA RECEIVE PATTERNS

1.1 Receiver Functional Overview

This section describes the functionality of the existing Mode S receiver.

The RF (Radio Frequency) Receiver, IF Monopulse Receiver, and Video Processor/Monitor (VP/M) are Lowest Replaceable Units (LRU) comprising the receiver section of the Mode S Interrogator. The RF Receiver receives the Sigma, Delta, and Omega 1090 MHz RF signals from the antenna. A 90º hybrid coupler within the RF Receiver combines the Sigma (∑) and Delta (∆) RF signals to form RF signals A1RF and B1RF signals, defined as follows:

A1RF = (∑ + j ∆)/√2 B1RF = j(∑ - j ∆)/√2

Mixing the Sigma and Delta signals in a 90° hybrid coupler converts the Sigma and Delta amplitude ratio into a function of the A1RF and B1RF phases. The A1RF and B1RF phase difference is proportional to the Delta over Sigma amplitude ratio, making the phase difference proportional to the antenna off-boresight angle. The purpose of converting the Sigma and Delta to be a function of phase rather than amplitude is to prevent gain changes in the RF Receiver from significantly affecting off-boresight azimuth accuracy.

The RF Receiver then mixes the A1RF, B1RF, and Omega 1090 MHz signals with a 1030 MHz local oscillator signal to convert them to ER/A1IF, ER/B1IF, and ER/OMEGA 60 MHz IF signals, respectively. The phase difference between the A1RF and B1RF is maintained with the ER/A1IF and ER/B1IF signals when the RF Receiver mixes the signals.

Independent phase adjustment of the ER/A1IF and ER/B1IF signals is provided in the RF Receiver using 40° phase shifters. In addition, phase-matched cables are also used between the RF Receiver and the IF Monopulse Receiver. Note that no 60 MHz bandpass filter is applied to the A1IF, B1IF, and ER/Omega signals in the RF Receiver.

The IF Monopulse Receiver also receives IF test target signals from a RF Test Target Generator (RFTTG) via a 3-way power divider and couplers that inject the RFTTG signal into the A1IF, B1IF, and Omega IF signal paths.

The current IF Monopulse Receiver uses a 90º hybrid coupler to produce Sigma and Delta signals from the A1IF and B1IF signals. It also produces a monopulse video signal that corresponds to the relative phase between the A1IF and B1IF signals.

The recovered Sigma, Delta, and Omega IF signals are input to separate matched logarithmic amplifier/detectors to produce Sigma (ER/LOGSIM), Delta (ER/LOGDELT), and Omega (ER/LOGOMEG) log video output signals sent to the VP/M. The monopulse video signal is also sent to the VP/M.

In addition, the IF Monopulse Receiver also produces two auxiliary Sigma log video outputs, ER/AUXLGSG and ER/AUXLOG. The ER/AUXLGSG log video signal is sent to the VP/M for use in a backup mode. The ER/AUXLOG log video signal is sent to the Signal Monitor Panel A17 as a test point, and at ASR-8/Mode S sites to the Common Terminal Digitizer (CTD) Interface Board. See FIGURE 2 – SIMPLIFIED INTERROGATOR

BLOCK DIAGRAM AND CTD MODIFICATION KIT.

FIGURE 2 – SIMPLIFIED INTERROGATOR BLOCK DIAGRAM AND CTD MODIFICATION KIT

1.2 Antenna Pattern Characteristics

The antenna gains for the Sigma and Delta channels vary with the off-boresight angle. At antenna boresight, the Sigma gain is at a maximum, whereas the Delta gain is at a minimum. See FIGURE 3 - SIGMA AND DELTA ANTENNA GAIN VS. ANGLE CURVES and FIGURE 4 – SIGMA AND OMEGA ANTENNA GAIN VS. ANGLE CURVES. Crossover is the off-boresight angle where the Sigma and Delta gains are equal. There are two crossover angles, one to the left and the other to the right of antenna boresight.

The Sigma and Delta RF signals are aligned to be in phase on one side of antenna boresight and 180º out of phase on the other side of antenna boresight.

The Mode S sensor is required to process aircraft replies when the aircraft is within the antenna beam from a Delta to Sigma voltage ratio of 2:1 (6 dB). The combined Sum and Delta antenna input power is maximum at antenna boresight. Although dependent on the specific antenna, the combined Sigma and Delta antenna power when the Delta to Sigma voltage ratio is 2:1 has a combined power approximately

1.8 dB less than the Sigma antenna power at boresight.

1.3 Receiver Characteristics

The calculated phase differences between ER/A1IF and ER/B1IF vs. the Delta to Sigma Ratio is shown in FIGURE 5 – ER/A1IF ER/B1IF PHASE DIFFERENCE VS. DELTA/SIGMA RATIO. The nominal phase differences between ER/A1IF and ER/B1IF for key Delta/Sigma amplitude ratios are shown in TABLE 1 –

The Mode S sensor is installed at terminal (airport) and en route (long range) sites. The Mode S is required to process aircraft replies at the RF Receiver from -20 dBm to -82 dBm at terminal sites and from -20 dBm to -85 dBm at en route sites; the replies are from 1087.0 MHz to 1093.0 MHz in frequency. The RF Receiver has gains of 41 dB ±2 dB for the ER/A1IF and ER/B1IF channels and 44 dB ±2 dB for the ER/OMEGAIF channel.

2 Requirements

2.1 System Interfaces

This section describes the interface between the IF Monopulse Receiver replacement and other sections of the Mode S system.

[IF-RCVR-SPEC-0001] The IF Monopulse Receiver replacement must accept the same set of input signals and produce the same set of output signals as the existing IF Monopulse Receiver.

2.1.1 RF Receiver Interface

The RF Receiver provides three 60 MHz IF signals, ER/A1IF, ER/B1IF, and ER/OMEGAIF, to the IF Monopulse Receiver. The ER/A1IF and ER/B1IF are ideally the same magnitude but contain a phase difference that represents the amplitude difference between the Sigma and Delta antenna signals. The mixing of the 1090 MHz RF signals with a 1030 MHz local oscillator signal generates the 60 MHz signals. The RF Receiver does not contain a bandpass filter to remove harmonic components. See TABLE 2 – RF RECEIVER

CHARACTERISTICS.

TABLE 2 – RF RECEIVER CHARACTERISTICS

Outputs on the ER/A1IF, ER/B1IF, and ER/OMEGAIF Channels Center Frequency: 60 MHz Maximum Output Power 23 dBm Receiver Gain: 41 dB ±2 dB for ER/AIF and ER/B1IF, 44 dB ±2 dB for ER/OMEGAIF

Maximum ±0.5 dB gain difference between the ER/A1IF and ER/B1IF channels

Bandwidth: 8.5 MHz 1 dB Compression Point: 24.5 dBm Image Reject Mixers: RF Receiver does not provide image rejection

The RF Receiver also provides modulated Alternating Current (AC) power to a heater located in the current IF Monopulse Receiver. The current IF Monopulse Receiver contains a temperature sensor to provide a feedback signal to the RF Receiver to control whether AC power is supplied to the heater. The heater maintains a relatively constant temperature to minimize the temperature dependence of its components.

See FIGURE 6 – RF RECEIVER DIAGRAM.

FIGURE 6 – RF RECEIVER DIAGRAM

2.1.2 RFTTG Interface

The RFTTG provides a single 60 MHz IF signal, ER/IFTEST, which passes through a 3:1 power divider in the current IF Monopulse Receiver. The ER/IFTEST signal is used as an alternative 60 MHz IF A1, B1, and Omega input signal to the IF Monopulse Receiver for test purposes. The ER/IFTEST signal is generated by a RF Switch and the output impedance of the RFTTG is 50 Ω. See FIGURE 7 – RFTTG DIAGRAM.

2.5 Temperature Control

The current IF Monopulse Receiver receives 120 V AC power from the RF Receiver heater circuit to maintain a constant temperature. The current IF Monopulse Receiver contains a negative coefficient thermistor that outputs a signal to the RF Receiver heater control circuit to turn on and off the AC power to the IF Monopulse Receiver heater. See TABLE 10 – HEATER CONTROL SIGNAL DESCRIPTIONS for the characteristics of the heater control signals to the IF Monopulse Receiver.

The RF Receiver heater control circuit will provide AC power to the IF Monopulse Receiver when the current thermistor resistance is above the nominal value of 746 Ω at 60º C. The current thermistor has a nominal value of 3000 Ω at 25º C. A 700 Ω resistance across the SENSE+ and SENSE- terminals will prevent AC power from being applied in a non-failure RF Receiver heater control circuit mode. The current IF Monopulse Receiver contains a 60 Ω heater element that is heated when AC power is applied.

The use of the 120 V Heater AC power by the IF Monopulse Receiver is not required if the design is able to meet requirements over the normal temperature operating range defined in section 2.9 Environmental.

[IF-RCVR-SPEC-0071] The IF Monopulse Receiver must use the 120 V Heater AC power for temperature control purposes only.

[IF-RCVR-SPEC-0072] The IF Monpulse Receiver must use a maximum power of 120 watts RMS from the 120 V Heater AC power when AC power is required.

[IF-RCVR-SPEC-0073] The IF Monopulse Receiver must receive the SENSE+ and SENSE- signals from the RF Receiver.

[IF-RCVR-SPEC-0074] The IF Monopulse Receive must provide a resistive circuit between the SENSE+ and SENSE- signals to turn off the AC power when AC power is not required.

[IF-RCVR-SPEC-0075] The IF Monopulse Receiver must provide circuit protection when the 120 V Heater AC power is received when AC power is not required.
