About this file
This is a Technical Specification and Requirements document for the procurement of a research-grade Compact Benchtop Mass Spectrometer (CMS) system with associated accessories and support services.
The core instrument must be a compact, benchtop single quadrupole mass spectrometer with both Electrospray Ionization (ESI) and Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Ionization (APCI) ion sources, designed to fit within a standard laboratory fume hood with maximum dimensions of 11 inches W x 22 inches D x 26 inches H. The system shall feature a manual dual-position rotary liquid injection valve, operate across flow rates of 10–1,000 μL/min, and achieve a mass-to-charge range of m/z 10 to m/z 2,000. Performance requirements include high-speed scanning up to 10,000 m/z units/sec, mass resolution of 0.5–0.7 m/z units (FWHM) at 1,000 m/z units/sec, mass accuracy within ±0.1 m/z units, and mass stability within ±0.1 m/z units over 30 continuous days. Sensitivity specifications require detection of 100 pg reserpine at 100:1 Signal-to-Noise ratio in full-scan mode and 10 pg reserpine at 100:1 S/N using Selected Ion Monitoring. The system must operate on standard North American 110V, 15-Amp electrical service and consume no more than 60 PSI of nitrogen gas pressure.
The procurement includes comprehensive software control capabilities for both the mass spectrometer and existing HPLC systems from a unified interface, with automated peak detection, charge deconvolution utilities, and support for up to 4 simultaneous Extracted Ion Chromatogram and Total Ion Chromatogram channels via programmable analog outputs. Optional scalable interface kits must be available for Thin-Layer Chromatography analysis, direct solids and liquids probes, headspace and gas analysis, continuous-flow sampling, and preparative chromatography systems. The complete turn-key package includes a rotary vane vacuum pumping system with oil mist filter, diaphragm pump-based exhaust system, dedicated pre-configured workstation, professional on-site installation, operator training, and a minimum 12-month hardware and software warranty.

1. General System Description The system must be a compact, benchtop single quadrupole mass spectrometer with a liquid introduction interface and manual flow injection valve, designed for rapid, real-time chemical and molecular analysis directly at a chemist's bench. The instrument must support versatile ionization techniques (ESI and APCI) and interface seamlessly with existing laboratory liquid chromatography infrastructure.
2. Core Instrument Specifications The instrument must meet or exceed the following core hardware and performance specifications:
Parameter Requirement Specification
Ion Sources Must include both Electrospray Ionization (ESI) and Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Ionization (APCI) ion sources.
Sample Introduction Must have direct injection operation and include a manual, dual-position rotary liquid injection valve installed directly inside the spectrometer frame/chassis.
Mass Analyzer Must be a single quadrupole mass filter covering a mass-to-charge (m/z) range of at least m/z 10 to m/z 2,000.
Flow Rate Range Must operate reliably across a flow rate range of 10 μL/min to 1,000 μL/min.
Polarity Switching Must be capable of performing positive and negative ion analyses in a single analytical run.
Acquisition Rate Must support high-speed scanning up to 10,000 m/z units/sec, ensuring compatibility with UPLC and UHPLC systems.
Resolution Must resolve peaks at 0.5 to 0.7 m/z units (Full Width at Half Maximum – FWHM) at a scan speed of 1,000 m/z units/sec over the entire mass range.
System Sensitivity Must detect 100 pg of reserpine injected on-column with a minimum Signal-to- Noise (S/N) ratio of 100:1 (full-scan acquisition from m/z 100 to m/z 1,200).
Must detect 10 pg of reserpine injected on-column with a minimum S/N ratio of 100:1 using Selected Ion Monitoring (SIM) of m/z 609.28.
Mass Accuracy Must be within ± 0.1 m/z units over the entire acquisition range.
Mass Stability Must vary by no more than ± 0.1 m/z units over a continuous 30-day operating period.
Physical Dimensions Must be a compact benchtop unit designed to fit inside a standard laboratory fume hood, with physical dimensions no larger than 11 inches W x 22 inches D x 26 inches H.
Parameter Requirement Specification
Electrical Requirements Must operate from a standard North American 110V, 15Amp electrical outlet.
Nitrogen Gas Consumption Must require no more than 60 PSI of N2 gas pressure for full operation.
3. Control, Integration, and Data Processing Software The system software suite must provide comprehensive instrument control, advanced data processing, and flexible integration capabilities as detailed below:
• Multi-System Instrument Control: System must include software capable of controlling both the mass spectrometer and the existing High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) system from a single software interface.
