About this file

This document is a Minimum Specifications file for a soil sensor designed to measure apparent electrical conductivity, issued by the USDA Agricultural Research Service in Lubbock, TX. The specification details a ground/soil conductivity meter with specific technical requirements, including measurement capabilities of apparent conductivity in millisiemens per meter, intercoil spacing of 1 and 0.5 meters, operating frequency of 14.5 kHz, and a measuring range of 1000 mS/m. The data acquisition system includes a DAS70-MESA3 system with a MESA2 tablet, built-in GPS, Bluetooth, a Geode external GPS/GLONASS receiver, and EM4Soil Inversion Software, with SURFER Mapping software for data visualization.

The primary purpose is to support research in the Wind Erosion and Water Conservation Research Unit, enabling studies on soil spatial variability, crop phenotyping, yield prediction, and water holding capacity for crops like sorghum and cotton. The device is critical for performing research that currently lacks comprehensive soil electrical conductivity data. Delivery is specified as 90 days after the award date, with the government seeking a firm fixed-price purchase order. The solicitation (Number 12805B25Q0074) is full and open with no set-aside, targeting the NAICS code 334519 with a small business size standard of 600 employees, and quotes are due by 2 p.m. Central Time on March 27, 2025.

Minimum Specifications Project: Soil Sensor Equipped to Measure Apparent Electrical Conductivity

GENERAL INFORMATION

1.0 Background and Purpose:

This equipment is necessary to perform work proposed in multiple Objectives of the Project Plans of the Wind Erosion and Water Conservation Research Unit of the Cropping Systems Research laboratory in Lubbock, TX. Our research will focus on using detailed soil apparent electrical conductivity (ECa) maps to overlay onto remote sensing data collected via drones and/or satellite imagery. Potential studies that the device will be used for include: a study to use ECa maps as a substitute or to augment experimental field designs, use in prediction models for yield and other traits of interest, estimates of water holding capacity and other characteristics of soil, and more.

This equipment will be useful for future Project Plans as soil ECa is underutilized by the remote sensing community, currently. The purchase of this Geonics sensor will allow our unit and the WEWC unit to collect spatial soil data and leverage them to perform phenotyping studies in sorghum, cotton, and other key crop species.

2.0 Definitions:

ECa: Apparent Electrical Conductivity

3.0 Technical Requirements/Tasks:

The Wind Erosion and Water Conservation Research Unit has the following requirements for a ground/soil conductivity meter to meet the needs of its objectives.

Measurement Quantities:

1. Apparent conductivity in millisiemens per meter (mS/m) in-phase ratio of the secondary to primary magnetic field in parts per thousand (ppt).

2. In-phase ratio of the secondary to primary magnetic field in parts per thousand(ppt) Intercoil Spacing: 1 and 0.5 meters Operating Frequency: 14.5 kHz Measuring Range:

1. Conductivity: 1000 mS/m

2. In-phase: ± 28 ppt for 1 m separation

3. In-phase: ± 7 ppt for 0.5 m separation

Measurement Resolution: ± 0,1% of full scale Measurement Accuracy: ± 5% at 30 mS/m Data Output: RS-232 serial port, Bluetooth Power Source: 9 V disposable battery; external rechargeable battery pack Operating temperature: -40°C to +50°C Data Acquisition System:

1. DAS70-MESA3 Data Acquisition System (includes MESA2 tablet with built-in GPS and

Bluetooth)

2. Geode external GPS/GLONASS receiver attachment for MESA3 (includes 9-pin serial port)

3. EM4Soil Inversion Software (Geonics-only version): Specialized computer program design to analyze and interpret data collected form ground conductivity meter.

Mapping Software: SURFER Mapping software

4.0 Deliverable / Schedule:

Delivery shall occur 90 days after date of award.

5.0 Performance Requirement Measures:

This device is required to perform the research that we are interested in. The availability of soil electrical conductivity is critical to perform the spatial variability and modeling studies and is considered standard in the literature. Without these data, the only means that we have to address spatial variability of the soil is to use experimental designs or to conduct costly soil sampling. Thus, to perform studies on abiotic stress or to investigate differing agricultural management practices or to account for spatial variability it is imperative that we have access to these ECa data.
