N M 45 LF FRP trail bridge was in Good condition. Damaged as of 4.2021. $16,000.00

One FRP hand rail side panel pulled out – I laid it on bridge outriggers so it would not get damaged until repair

Rail heights = 54 inches Clear deck width = 70.5 inches FRP trusses (Fiber Reinforced Polymer) Bridge end object markers and numbers in place.

Sloped bridge ends.

Did quick visual check of nuts and bolts - good Vegetation grown on abutments and creating visual

Issue. Some vines growing in bridge panels. We lopped a lot of vegetation while assessing the bridge

REFERENCE ADDITIONAL REMARKS

The bridge is good length and is set far enough back onto the banks. The stream channel side-slopes are observed to be stable with some upper scour on both sides. The stream channel shows evidence of high water. This a large watershed.

Barrow rode across this bridge two days later and a complete length of side rail panel had been pulled out. This piece was set aside undamaged. (Update as of 4.9.2021 – notified of tree falling across downstream truss. Must be replaced. Estimate $15,000 (order, truck-transport 45 ft members, jack up bridge, take apart, replace, labor, etc) $1000 for other bridge work.

Clean deck, add mid rail

No backwall plank on bridge ends. This is a square end bridge.

Note: When this bridge is considered to be replaced, the crossing could be moved higher up into the drainage – approximately 650 LF of re-route and new construction and an arch culvert installed to cross the small drainage. Several hundred feet of existing trail would be obliterated

The stream channel indicates fast draining water. Erosion on north bank under bridge. Trees getting undermined.

The superstructure (stringers and deck) are ok for now, 3 stringers of 6”x12”x30 ‘.

The bridge is good length and is set far enough back onto the banks. The stream channel side-slopes are observed to be stable with some upper scour on the north side.

The steel soldier piles and caps of the abutments have some paint flaking. Recommend wire brushing and recoat exposed surfaces with primer+rustoleum enamel paint. Clean bridge and deck. Should consider adding more riprap on scour area of north bridge end channel.

N M 11 ft. minor timber trail bridge in Fair condition. One foot height off ground in center. Rarely any water. $500.00

Cannot see timber sills, appear ok.

Clear deck width = 62 inches Timber handrails with no midrail.

One bridge end object marker. Two are required per bridge end.

Do minor maintenance and get another 5 or more years out of the existing structure. Replace with plastic arch culvert or 16 ft. timber structure in future

No backwall plank was installed on bridge ends.

P = POOR -ELEMENT STILL PERFORMING THE FUNCTION FOR WHICH IT WAS INTENDED

The bridge appears to functional for location since so low to ground. When replace, recommend at least 16 ft. structure. May be able to use a medium size arch culvert(AC) there.

Install bridge object markers and clean deck. Consider a 500 ft reroute west around with AC.

Do basic maintenance, clean, add object markers and fix brokern curb rail and add mid-rail extend life for another 3-5 years.

Curbing timber broken West end bridge stringer and sill

Bridge #14 – Inspected by Barrow in March, 2008

If and when the Bridge #14 is replaced, it might be possible to reroute the trail to the west, construct approximately 500 ft. of new trail to tie into the existing Zebra and by-pass the drain higher up the slope. This might only require a small plastic arch culvert to cross the drainage.

Clear deck width = 60 inches Timber curbs

Do minor maintenance and get another 5 or more years out of the existing structure. Replace with plastic arch culvert. …..However, the south approach curves directly on bridge – dangerous for motorcycle on a damp, slick deck. Flagged short approach reroute to make alignment straighter for motorcycles.

The bridge appears to be of adequate length and is set far enough back onto the banks.

The deck boards are spaced on average 2 inch gaps. Bridge superstructure (stringers and deck) are solid. Reset the turf block on the approach ends as necessary to correct those out of position and create a safety issue for motorcycles. Clear vegetation so riders can see object marker post at structure ends.
