Section 960 - Trail Bridges

Section 969 – Prefabricated Trail Bridge Structures

Description

969.00.01 This work consists of designing, fabricating, delivering, and installing a prefabricated bridge superstructures (fiberglass reinforced polymer, or FRP), and its components. The work also includes constructing construction stakeout, excavation and backfill for bridge approaches, and anchoring bridge superstructures to abutments as required.

Materials

969.00.02 Requirements. The FRP Bridge superstructure manufacturer shall be an ISO 90001:2008 accrediated company for the design and manufacture of FRP structural components and systems. The company shall have been in the business of design and fabrication of bridge superstructures for a minimum of ten years. Company shall provide a list of five (5) succesful bridge projects of similar construction, each of which has been in service at least three (3) years.

List the location, bridge length, owner, and contact reference for each bridge. The bridge shal consist of the following materials:

Furnish materials that meet the following requirements:

1. FRP Components – Furnish FRP composite shapes as designed by the bridge manufacturer, or AS SHOWN ON THE DRAWINGS. FRP materials shall be fabricated from high-strength E-glass and isophthalic polyester resin. Weathering and ultraviolet light protection shall be provided by addition of a veil to laminate construction.

Minimum characteristic design strengths, developed per ASTM D7290, shall conform to the following:

(a) Tension 59,150 psi ASTM D638

(b) Compression 43,363 psi ASTM D6641

(c) Shear (In-plane) 9,954 psi ASTM D5379

(d) Shear (Interlaminar) 3,969 psi ASTM D2344

(e) Young’s Modulus 3,870,000 psi ASTM D6641 & ASTM D638 (Taken as the mean of the lesser of the two)

2. Weep holes or other means of passively removing water from closed shapes are required at all low points for bottom and top chords, verticals, and diagonals.

3. Wood Decking – Wood decking shall be Southern Pine, as SHOWN ON THE PLANS.

Treated wood shall meet the requirements as SHOWN ON THE PLANS.

9/3/2019 Special Project Specifications-2

4. Hardware – All fasteners and hardware shall be hot dipped galvanized unless otherwise

SHOWN ON THE PLANS. Mounting devices shall be galvanized, unless otherwise

SHOWN ON THE PLANS.

Construction Requirements

969.00.03 Design Requirements. Structural design of the bridge superstructure shall be performed by or under tehe direct supervision of a licensed professional engineer and done in accordance with recognized engineering practices and principles. The engineer shall be licensed to practice in the State in which the bridge is fabricated. The design shall be in accordance with AASHTO Standard Specifications for Highway bridges, 17th edition, and as recommended by AASHTO’s Guide Specification for Design of FRP Pedestrian Bridges. The design shall meet the following requirements:

• Camber: The ridge shall have a vertical camber dimension at midspan equal to 100% of the full dead load deflection.

• Pedestrian Live Load: 90 PSF

• Point Load: 1,000 pounds for equestrian trail bridges only

• Handrail: Designed to resist 50 pounds per linear foot, or single concentrated load of 200 pounds applied in any direction.

• Live Load Deflection: L/360

• Vertical Frequency: 5.0 Hz

• Horizontal Frequency: 3.0 Hz

• Under AASHTO, a safety factor of (4.0) shall be used for determining the allowable stresses based on the ultimate strength of all FRP materials

Tension 4.0 Compression 4.0 Shear 4.0 Bending 4.0 End Bearing 4.0 Conections 4.0

Refer to the contract drawings for additional details on design requirements, including span and width length.

Use durable materials to allow removal, transportation, and re-installation without using specialized construction equipment. When required, design bridges to allow transportation by air or pack animals and complete construction by manual labor. Use design techniques and fabrication methods to minimize field installation difficulties. Fabricate primary components from fiberglass reinforced polymer.

9/3/2019 Special Project Specifications-3

969.00.04 Design Drawings. Provide design drawings and calculations for the prefabricated bridge components including wind, seismic, and bearing forces. The Contractor is responsible for preparing all shop drawings necessary for erection of the bridge. All design drawings and calculations shall have the seal of a registered professional engineer.

The Contractor shall submit all design drawings at least 30 days in advance of the start of fabrication to allow time for review by the CO and correction of any changes. Include plans, elevation, and section views of the pedestrian bridge superstructure, dimensions of all components, connection details, and general and specific notes regarding design and construction.

The Contractor and CO shall be provided with detailed installation instructions.

969.00.05 Submittals

1. FRP Composite Certification – All certified test reports shall be furnished upon request showing the materials and manufacturing processes used in the fabrication of the pultruded components are in compliance with Section 969.00.02.

2. Bolt Certification – All certified mill test reports shall be furnished upon request. Mill test reports shall show the chemical analysis and physical test results for each heat of steel used in the work. All bolts shall be produced in the United States of America.

3. Wood Certifications - Furnish the following compliance certificates to the CO upon delivery of the wood materials to the jobsite:

(a) Verification of compliance with grading rules and species of timber and lumber.

Provide certification by an agency accepted as competent by the American Lumber Standards Committee (ALSC).

(b) Lot certification of each charge for preservative, penetration in inches, and retention in pounds per cubic foot (assay method) by a qualified independent inspection and testing agency. In addition, have the producer of the treated products provide written certification that Best Management Practices (BMP's) in accordance with "Best Management Practices for Treated Wood in Western Aquatic Environments," published by the Western Wood Preservers Institute (WWPI) and Canadian Institute of Treated Wood, were followed, including a description and appropriate documentation of the applicable BMP's used.

Large trees shall also be anchored into the existing ground a minimum 25 feet from the edge of waterway, parallel with the direction of flow, and minimum 25 feet downstream of new bridge. Cut large trees as needed to avoid damaging surrounding vegetation when anchoring tree into the ground.

969.00.07 Performance. Notify the CO at least before delivering the bridge.

If the prefabricated superstructure is not installed immediately upon delivery to the project site, provide appropriate equipment and labor to unload and stack, support, and store all material at the delivery point. Support and stack all components to prevent damage. Furnish and install blocking to support all components at least 12 inches above the ground.
