1. PRESERVATION.

1.1 Generator Alternator. Preserve "Method 53 Floating Watervaporproof bag, sealed" with desiccant. The Unit Container shall be an ASTM D6256 Type

I, Class 2, Style A, Wood Cleated Box with Skidded Load-Bearing Base using lag bolts or other reusable hardware. Base shall be full panel plywood with plywood panels on ends, sides and top. Use bolts to secure the generator(alternator) to the load bearing base of the ASTM D6256 container.

Before sealing the barrier bag, be sure to block and/or brace the Main Rotor Assembly to be physically separated from the

Main Stator.

See “Fig. 1” as an example. An inspection port is required to coincide with the location of the humidity indicator to view the humidity indicator installed in the bag. Indicator shall comply with SAE AS26860, Type

II.

2. PACKING.

2.1 Level A. The unit container will serve as the shipping container.

3. MARKING.

3.1 Marking. Marking shall be in accordance with MIL-STD-129.

3.2 Special marking. See ASTM D6256 for special container markings. The words “REUSABLE CONTAINER” and “METHOD 50” shall be marked on the identification-marked side and one end of the container.

3.2.1 A warning tag shall be prepared and attached to all new or repaired alternators which alerts the receiver to locate and complete the DA Form

2404, "Equipment Inspection and Maintenance Worksheet", prior to return shipment. The following statement will be included on the warning tag:

"Information describing the deficiencies of the equipment that placed it into inoperable status shall be documented on DA Form 2404 "Equipment Inspection and Maintenance Worksheet" and returned with the unserviceable equipment."

The data recorded on DA Form 2404 will aid in future repairs of the alternator, improve cost reduction initiatives, and provide feedback to help update maintenance technical manuals.

3.2.2 A copy of the DA Form 2404, "Equipment Inspection and Maintenance

Worksheet", will be included with new or repaired alternators and placed in a prominent location inside the unit container prior to shipment.

4. Requirements For Wood Packaging Material. All CONUS and OCONUS shipments utilizing wood packaging material, such as pallets, dunnage, crating, packing blocks, drums, cases, load boards, pallet collars, and skids, shall meet the

International Standards for Phytosanitary Measures, ISPM 15, entitled

“Regulation of Wood Packaging Material in International Trade”.

5. Container Reuse. A warning tag shall be prepared and attached to the generator alternator with the following instuctions, “Whenever possible, reuse existing container, bolts, blocking and bracing to return the unserviceable generator alternator.”
