About this file

This document is a series of system architecture diagrams and technical specifications for a hospital Interactive Television (ITV) system. The system integrates multiple content sources and distribution mechanisms to deliver television services throughout a hospital facility to patient rooms, non-patient rooms, and conference rooms.

The ITV system architecture consists of a centralized Head End that receives and processes content from multiple sources: commercial television channels via a cable service provider (40 channels), a Network Clock System providing GPS-based timing for a Time of Day channel, broadcast equipment for live content from two locations, applications for messages and surveys, and on-demand programming including both paid Video on Demand (VOD) services and interactive staff programming. Content is distributed via a dedicated ITV IP network using multicast technology to Set Top Boxes (STBs) located throughout the hospital. Distribution endpoints include conference rooms (with STB remotes and PDWB local inputs), non-patient rooms (with STB remotes), and patient rooms (with Pillow Speaker controls and IB3 devices). The Head End infrastructure comprises three servers: an Application Server hosting the ITV application and user interface, an Encryption Server for securing streams between the Head End and STBs, and a VOD Server containing on-demand content. The ITV Local Area Network uses a Core Switch connected via single-mode fiber to multiple Edge Switches, which connect via CAT6 cabling to the STBs. System administration occurs via a dedicated Administration Workstation or rack-mounted console, managing applications, set-top boxes, and network devices. All television sets are GFCI-compliant, and the system supports optional date/time stamping on interface screens and administrator access to viewing statistics.
