SECTION 011000 - SUMMARY

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 SUMMARY

A. Section Includes:

1.2 PROJECT INFORMATION

A. Project Identification: Cranberry Mountain Nature Center (CMNC) Fire Alarm System

1. Project Location: 6403 Stamping Creek Rd., Hillsboro, WV 24946

B. Owner: United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service

1.3 WORK COVERED BY CONTRACT DOCUMENTS

A. The Work of Project is defined by the Contract Documents and consists of the following:

1. Reference Statement of Work and other Work indicated in the Contract Documents.

B. Type of Contract:

1. Project will be constructed under a single prime contract.

1.4 CONTRACTOR'S USE OF SITE AND PREMISES

A. Restricted Use of Site: Contractor shall have limited use of Project site for construction operations as indicated on Drawings by the Contract limits and as indicated by requirements of this Section.

B. Limits on Use of Site: Limit use of Project site to areas within the Contract limits indicated. Do not disturb portions of Project site beyond areas in which the Work is indicated.

1. Limits on Use of Site: Confine construction operations to areas inside the building necessary to perform contract tasks.

2. Driveways, Walkways, and Entrances: Keep driveways parking areas, loading areas, and entrances serving premises clear and available to Owner, Owner's employees, the public and emergency vehicles at all times. Do not use these areas for parking or for storage of materials. Coordinate storage areas with COR and building manager.

C. Condition of Existing Building: Maintain portions of existing building affected by construction operations in a weathertight condition throughout construction period. Repair damage caused by construction operations.

1.5 COORDINATION WITH OCCUPANTS

A. Full Owner Occupancy: Owner will occupy site and existing building(s) during entire construction period. Cooperate with Owner during construction operations to minimize conflicts and facilitate Owner usage. Perform the Work so as not to interfere with Owner's day-to-day operations. Maintain existing exits unless otherwise indicated.

1.6 WORK RESTRICTIONS

A. Comply with restrictions on construction operations.

1. Comply with limitations on use of public streets, work on public streets, rights of way, and other requirements of authorities having jurisdiction.

B. On-Site Work Hours: Limit work in the existing building to normal business working hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, unless otherwise indicated. Coordinate with COR. Facility is open 9:00 AM – 4:30 PM Thursday – Monday, seasonally.

C. Existing Utility Interruptions: Do not interrupt utilities serving facilities occupied by Owner or others unless permitted under the following conditions and then only after providing temporary utility services according to requirements indicated:

1. Notify COR not less than two business days in advance of proposed utility interruptions.

2. Obtain COR’s written or verbal permission before proceeding with utility interruptions.

D. Noise, Vibration, Dust, and Odors: Coordinate operations that may result in high levels of noise and vibration, dust, odors, or other disruption to Owner occupancy with Owner.

1. Notify COR not less than two business days in advance of proposed disruptive operations.

2. Obtain CORs written or verbal permission before proceeding with disruptive operations.

1.7 SPECIFICATION AND DRAWING CONVENTIONS

A. Specification Content: The Specifications use certain conventions for the style of language and the intended meaning of certain terms, words, and phrases when used in particular situations.

These conventions are as follows:

1. Imperative mood and streamlined language are generally used in the Specifications. The words "shall," "shall be," or "shall comply with," depending on the context, are implied where a colon (:) is used within a sentence or phrase.

2. Text Color: Text used in the Specifications, including units of measure, manufacturer and product names, and other text may appear in multiple colors or underlined as part of a hyperlink; no emphasis is implied by text with these characteristics.

3. Hypertext: Text used in the Specifications may contain hyperlinks. Hyperlinks may allow for access to linked information that is not residing in the Specifications. Unless otherwise indicated, linked information is not part of the Contract Documents.

4. Specification requirements are to be performed by Contractor unless specifically stated otherwise.

B. Division 01 General Requirements: Requirements of Sections in Division 01 apply to the Work of all Sections in the Specifications.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 Reference Statement of work for list of system components needed for project.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 Repairs/damage caused by project tasks

A. Any work that causes damage (including cutting, drilling, etc.) necessary for install of proposed system elements or holes left from demolition of existing system elements shall be properly patched and painted to match existing conditions.

3.2 Finishes of materials

A. Any wire molding or conduits installed that are surface mounted or exposed shall be painted to match surface being mounted on, including wooden paneling.

B. Red fixtures should be avoided when possible, while maintaining compliance with all applicable building codes. Use white, off-white, or grey when able.

SECTION 013300 - SUBMITTAL PROCEDURES

1.1 SUMMARY

A. Section Includes:

1. Submittal schedule requirements.

2. Administrative and procedural requirements for submittals.

1.2 DEFINITIONS

A. Approval: Equivalent to “No Exception Taken”.

B. Approved or Approved Equivalent: To possess the same performance qualities and char-acteristics and fulfill the utilitarian function without any decrease in quality, durability or longevity. For equipment/products defined by the Contractor as "equivalent", substitution requests must be submitted to Contracting Officer’s Representative for consideration and be approved by the COR in writing. Approval shall constitute “No Exception Taken” and shall not be otherwise construed.

C. "No Exception Taken" constitutes that review is for general conformance with the design concept expressed in the Contract Documents for the limited purpose of checking for conformance with information given. Any action is subject to the requirements of the Contract Documents.

Contractor is responsible for the dimensions and quantity and will confirm and correlate at the job site, fabrication processes and techniques of construction, coordination of the work with that of all other trades, and the satisfactory performance of the work.

D. Action Submittals: Written and graphic information and physical samples that require CO or COR’s responsive action. Action submittals are those submittals indicated in individual Specification Sections as "action submittals."

E. Informational Submittals: Written and graphic information and physical samples that do not require CO or COR’s responsive action. Submittals may be rejected for not complying with requirements. Informational submittals are those submittals indicated in individual Specification Sections as "informational submittals."

1.3 SUBMITTAL FORMATS

A. Submittal Information: Include the following information in each submittal:

1. Contract Name and Number.

2. Date.

3. Name of Contractor.

4. Name of firm or entity that prepared the submittal

5. Names of subcontractor, manufacturer, and supplier.

6. Category and type of submittal.

7. Submittal Purpose and description.

8. Number and title of Specification Section, with paragraph number and generic name for each of multiple items.

9. Drawing number and detail references, as appropriate.

10. Indication of full or partial completion.

11. Consecutive transmittal number.

12. Submittal and transmittal distribution record.

13. Other necessary identification.

14. Remarks.

B. Options: Identify options requiring selection by Contracting Officer/COR.

C. Deviations and Additional Information: On an attached separate sheet, prepared on Con-tractor's letterhead, record relevant information, requests for data, revisions other than those requested by Contracting Officer on previous submittals, and deviations from re-quirements in the Contract Documents, including minor variations and limitations. Include same identification information as related submittal. Include the Contracting Officer on all deviation requests.

1.4 SUBMITTAL PROCEDURES

A. Prepare and submit submittals required by individual Specification Sections as PDF elec-tronic files and as indicated for samples and other physical submittals. Types of submit-tals are indicated in individual Specification Sections.

B. Submittals shall be transmitted via email to the COR & CO.

C. Identify and incorporate information in each electronic submittal file as follows:

1. Assemble complete submittal package into a single indexed file incorporating sub-mittal requirements of a single Specification Section and transmittal form accepta-ble to Government with links enabling navigation to each item.

2. Provide means for insertion to permanently record Contractor's review and approval markings and action taken by COR.

D. Coordination: Coordinate preparation and processing of submittals with performance of construction activities

1. Coordinate each submittal with fabrication, purchasing, testing, delivery, other submittals, and related activities that require sequential activity.

2. Submit all submittal items required for each Specification Section concurrently unless partial submittals for portions of the Work are indicated on approved submittal schedule.

3. Submit action submittals and informational submittals required by the same Specification

Section as separate packages under separate transmittals.

4. Coordinate transmittal of different types of submittals for related parts of the Work so processing will not be delayed because of need to review submittals concurrently for coordination.

a. Contracting Officer or COR reserves the right to withhold action on a submittal requiring coordination with other submittals until related submittals are received.

E. Processing Time: Allow time for submittal review, including time for resubmittals, as fol-lows.

Time for review shall commence on Contracting Officer's and COR’s receipt of submittal. No extension of the Contract Time will be authorized because of failure to transmit submittals enough in advance of the Work to permit processing, including re-submittals

1. Initial Review: Allow 15 days for initial review of each submittal. Allow additional time if coordination with subsequent submittals is required. Contracting Officer or COR will advise Contractor when a submittal being processed must be delayed for coordination.

2. Intermediate Review: If intermediate submittal is necessary, process intermediate review in same manner as initial submittal.

3. Resubmittal Review: Allow 15 days for review of each resubmittal.

4. Sequential Review: Where sequential review of submittals by Contracting Officer's consultants, Government, or other parties is indicated, allow 21 days for initial review of each submittal.

F. Resubmittals: Make resubmittals in same form and number of copies as initial submittal.

1. Indicate date and content of previous submittal.

2. Indicate date and content of revision in label or title block and clearly indicate extent of revision.

3. Resubmit submittals until they are approved in writing by the CO or COR (in a method acceptable to the specifications or as otherwise described by the CO).

G. Distribution: Furnish copies of final submittals to manufacturers, subcontractors, suppliers, fabricators, installers, authorities having jurisdiction, and others as necessary for performance of construction activities. Show distribution on transmittal forms.

H. Use for Construction: Retain complete copies of submittals on Project site. Use only final action or material submittals that are approved in writing by the Contracting Officer or COR.

1.5 SUBMITTAL REQUIREMENTS

A. Product Data: Collect information into a single submittal for each element of construction and type of product or equipment.

1. If information must be specially prepared for submittal because standard published data are unsuitable for use, submit as Shop Drawings, not as Product Data.

2. Clearly mark each copy of each submittal to show which products and options are applicable.

3. Include the following information, as applicable:

a. Manufacturer's catalog cuts.

b. Manufacturer's product specifications.

c. Standard color charts.

d. Statement of compliance with specified referenced standards.

e. Testing by recognized testing agency.

f. Application of testing agency labels and seals.

g. Notation of coordination requirements.

h. Availability and delivery time information.

4. Submit Product Data before Shop Drawings, and before or concurrent with Samples.

5. Submit Product Data in PDF electronic file.

B. Shop Drawings: Prepare Project-specific information, drawn accurately to scale. Do not base Shop Drawings on standard printed data.

1. Preparation: Fully illustrate requirements in the Contract Documents. Include the following information, as applicable:

a. Identification of products.

b. Schedules.

c. Compliance with specified standards.

d. Notation of coordination requirements.

e. Notation of dimensions established by field measurement.

f. Relationship and attachment to adjoining construction clearly indicated

2. Paper Sheet Size: Except for templates, patterns, and similar full-size Drawings, submit Shop Drawings on sheets at least 11 by 17 inches, but no larger than 30 by 42 inches (750 by 1067 mm).

3. Submit Shop Drawings in PDF Electronic Format.

C. Qualification Data: Prepare written information that demonstrates capabilities and experience of firm or person. Include lists of completed projects with project names and addresses, contact information of architects and owners, and other information specified.

D. Design Data/Product Data/Materials Submittals: Prepare and submit written and graphic information indicating compliance with indicated performance and design criteria in indi-vidual Specification Sections. Include list of assumptions and summary of loads. Include load diagrams if applicable. Provide name and version of software, if any, used for calcu-lations. Number each page of submittal.

E. Certificates:

1. Certificates and Certifications Submittals: Submit a statement that includes signature of entity responsible for preparing certification. Certificates and certifications shall be signed by an officer or other individual authorized to sign documents on behalf of that entity.

Provide original paper copy where a notarized signature is required.

2. Installer Certificates: Submit written statements on manufacturer's letterhead certifying that Installer complies with requirements in the Contract Documents and, where required, is authorized by manufacturer for this specific Project.

3. Manufacturer Certificates: Submit written statements on manufacturer's letterhead certifying that manufacturer complies with requirements in the Contract Documents.

Include evidence of manufacturing experience where required.

4. Material Certificates: Submit written statements on manufacturer's letterhead certifying that material complies with requirements in the Contract Documents.

5. Product Certificates: Submit written statements on manufacturer's letterhead certifying that product complies with requirements in the Contract Documents

F. Test and Research Reports:

1. Compatibility Test Reports: Submit reports written by a qualified testing agency, on testing agency's standard form, indicating and interpreting results of compatibility tests performed before installation of product. Include written recommendations for primers and substrate preparation needed for adhesion.

2. Field Test Reports: Submit written reports indicating and interpreting results of field tests performed either during installation of product or after product is installed in its final location, for compliance with requirements in the Contract Documents.

3. Material Test Reports: Submit reports written by a qualified testing agency, on testing agency's standard form, indicating and interpreting test results of material for compliance with requirements in the Contract Documents.

4. Preconstruction Test Reports: Submit reports written by a qualified testing agency, on testing agency's standard form, indicating and interpreting results of tests performed before installation of product, for compliance with performance requirements in the Contract Documents.

5. Product Test Reports: Submit written reports indicating that current product produced by manufacturer complies with requirements in the Contract Documents. Base reports on evaluation of tests performed by manufacturer and witnessed by a qualified testing agency, or on comprehensive tests performed by a qualified testing agency.

6. Research Reports: Submit written evidence, from a model code organization acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction, that product complies with building code in effect for Project. Include the following information:

7. Name of evaluation organization.

8. Date of evaluation.

9. Time period when report is in effect.

10. Product and manufacturers' names.

11. Description of product.

12. Test procedures and results.

13. Limitations of use.

G.

1.6 CONTRACTOR'S REVIEW

A. Action and Informational Submittals: Review each submittal and check for coordination with other Work of the Contract and for compliance with the Contract Documents. Note corrections and field dimensions. Mark with contractor approval before submitting to Contracting Officer and COR.

B. Contractor's Approval: Indicate Contractor's approval for each submittal with a uniform written approval method. Include name of reviewer, date of Contractor's approval, and statement certifying that submittal has been reviewed, checked, and approved for compliance with the Contract Documents

1.7 GOVERNMENT REVIEW

A. Contracting Officer’s Representative (COR) may approve technical submittals, unless otherwise indicated by the contract documents or determined in writing by the Contracting Officer (CO).

COR may review each submittal instead of the CO.

B. Action Submittals: Will be reviewed and their approval status will be documented in a project submittal review XLS spreadsheet returned to the contractor. The specific material items will be included in this review document and notes for approval, disapproval, and resubmittal and any questions on items.

C. All submittals reviewed will be approved in the material review spreadsheet only. This will be returned to contactor with each submittal group reviewed.

D. No marked up copies of material cut sheets will be returned to the contractor.

E. Informational Submittals: Contracting Officer or COR will review each submittal and will not return it, or may return it if it does not comply with requirements. Contracting Officer or COR may forward each submittal to appropriate party. Contractor is responsible for compliance with contract requirements and all applicable laws and regulations regardless of whether mistakes were discovered by CO or COR review of informational submittals.

F. Partial submittals prepared for a portion of the Work will be reviewed when use of partial submittals has received prior approval from COR or Contracting Officer.

G. Incomplete submittals are unacceptable, will be considered nonresponsive, and may be returned for resubmittal without review.

H. Submittals not required by the Contract Documents may be returned by Contracting Officer or COR without action.

SECTION 024119 - SELECTIVE DEMOLITION

1.1 SUMMARY

A. Section Includes:

1. Demolition and removal of selected portions of building or structure.

2. Demolition and removal of selected site elements.

1.2 MATERIALS OWNERSHIP

A. Unless otherwise indicated, demolition waste becomes property of Contractor.

B. Historic items, relics, antiques, and similar objects including, but not limited to, cornerstones and their contents, commemorative plaques and tablets, and other items of interest or value to Owner that may be uncovered during demolition remain the property of Owner.

1. Carefully salvage in a manner to prevent damage and promptly return to Owner.

1.3 PREINSTALLATION MEETINGS

A. Predemolition Conference: Conduct conference at Project site.

1.4 INFORMATIONAL SUBMITTALS

A. Proposed Protection Measures: Submit report, including Drawings, that indicates the measures proposed for protecting individuals and property, for dust control and, for noise control. Indicate proposed locations and construction of barriers.

B. Schedule of selective demolition activities with starting and ending dates for each activity.

C. Predemolition photographs or video.

1.5 CLOSEOUT SUBMITTALS

A. Inventory of items that have been removed and salvaged.

1.6 FIELD CONDITIONS

A. Owner will occupy portions of building immediately adjacent to selective demolition area.

Conduct selective demolition so Owner's operations will not be disrupted.

B. Conditions existing at time of inspection for bidding purpose will be maintained by Owner as far as practical.

C. Notify Architect of discrepancies between existing conditions and Drawings before proceeding with selective demolition.

D. Hazardous Materials: It is not expected that hazardous materials will be encountered in the Work.

1. If suspected hazardous materials are encountered, do not disturb; immediately notify

Architect and Owner. Hazardous materials will be removed by Owner under a separate contract.

E. Storage or sale of removed items or materials on-site is not permitted.

F. Utility Service: Maintain existing utilities indicated to remain in service and protect them against damage during selective demolition operations.

G. Arrange selective demolition schedule so as not to interfere with Owner's operations.

1.7 WARRANTY

A. Existing Warranties: Remove, replace, patch, and repair materials and surfaces cut or damaged during selective demolition, by methods and with materials and using approved contractors so as not to void existing warranties.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

A. Regulatory Requirements: Comply with governing EPA notification regulations before beginning selective demolition. Comply with hauling and disposal regulations of authorities having jurisdiction.

B. Standards: Comply with ANSI/ASSP A10.6 and NFPA 241.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION

A. Verify that utilities have been disconnected and capped before starting selective demolition operations.

B. Inventory and record the condition of items to be removed and salvaged.

3.2 PROTECTION

A. Remove temporary barricades and protections where hazards no longer exist.

3.3 SELECTIVE DEMOLITION

A. General: Demolish and remove existing construction only to the extent required by new construction and as indicated. Use methods required to complete the Work within limitations of governing regulations and as follows:

1. Neatly cut openings and holes plumb, square, and true to dimensions required. Use cutting methods least likely to damage construction to remain or adjoining construction. Use hand tools or small power tools designed for sawing or grinding, not hammering and chopping.

Temporarily cover openings to remain.

2. Cut or drill from the exposed or finished side into concealed surfaces to avoid marring existing finished surfaces.

3. Locate selective demolition equipment and remove debris and materials so as not to impose excessive loads on supporting walls, floors, or framing.

4. Dispose of demolished items and materials promptly.

B. Site Access and Temporary Controls: Conduct selective demolition and debris-removal operations to ensure minimum interference with roads, streets, walks, walkways, and other adjacent occupied and used facilities.

3.4 CLEANING

A. Remove demolition waste materials from Project site and dispose of them in an EPA-approved construction and demolition waste landfill acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction.

1. Do not allow demolished materials to accumulate on-site.

2. Remove and transport debris in a manner that will prevent spillage on adjacent surfaces and areas.

B. Burning: Do not burn demolished materials.

C. Clean adjacent structures and improvements of dust, dirt, and debris caused by selective demolition operations. Return adjacent areas to condition existing before selective demolition operations began.

SECTION 284621.13 - CONVENTIONAL FIRE-ALARM SYSTEMS

1.1 SUMMARY

A. Section Includes:

1. Fire-alarm control unit.

2. Manual fire-alarm boxes.

3. System smoke detectors.

4. Heat detectors.

5. Notification appliances.

6. Magnetic door holders.

7. Remote annunciator.

8. Digital alarm communicator transmitter.

B. Related Requirements:

1. All work completed under this contract shall comply with all applicable building codes including, but not limited to: NEC, NFPA, IBC.

1.2 ACTION SUBMITTALS

A. General Submittal Requirements:

1. Submittals shall be approved by authorities having jurisdiction prior to submitting them to

COR.

2. Shop Drawings shall be prepared by persons with the following qualifications:

a. Trained and certified by manufacturer in fire-alarm system design.

b. NICET-certified fire-alarm technician; Level III minimum.

c. Licensed or certified by authorities having jurisdiction.

B. Product Data: For each type of product, including furnished options and accessories.

C. Shop Drawings: For fire-alarm system.

1. Comply with recommendations and requirements in the "Documentation" section of the "Fundamentals" chapter in NFPA 72.

2. Include plans, elevations, sections, details, and attachments to other work.

3. Include details of equipment assemblies. Indicate dimensions, weights, loads, required clearances, method of field assembly, components, and locations. Indicate conductor sizes, 011000-CMNC FIRE ALARM SYSTEM PAGE 14 OF 23 indicate termination locations and requirements, and distinguish between factory and field wiring.

4. Detail assembly and support requirements.

5. Include voltage drop calculations for notification-appliance circuits.

6. Include battery size calculations.

7. Include input/output matrix.

1.4 CLOSEOUT SUBMITTALS

A. Operation and Maintenance Data: For fire-alarm systems and components to include in emergency, operation, and maintenance manuals.

1. In addition to items specified in Section 017823 "Operation and Maintenance Data," include the following and deliver copies to authorities having jurisdiction:

a. Comply with the "Records" section of the "Inspection, Testing and Maintenance" chapter in NFPA 72.

b. Provide the "Fire Alarm and Emergency Communications System Record of Completion Documents" according to the "Completion Documents" article in the "Documentation" section of the "Fundamentals" chapter in NFPA 72.

c. Complete wiring diagrams showing connections between all devices and equipment.

d. Riser diagram.

e. Record copy of site-specific software.

f. Provide the "Inspection and Testing Form" according to the "Inspection, Testing and

Maintenance" chapter in NFPA 72, and include the following:

1) Equipment tested.

2) Frequency of testing of installed components.

3) Frequency of inspection of installed components.

4) Requirements and recommendations related to results of maintenance.

5) Manufacturer's user training manuals.

g. Manufacturer's required maintenance related to system warranty requirements.

1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Installer Qualifications:

1. Personnel shall qualified by manufacturer recommendations for installation of units required for this Project.

2. Installation shall be by personnel certified by NICET as fire-alarm Level II, Level III, or Level IV technician.

B. NFPA Certification:

1. Obtain certification according to NFPA 72 by West Virginia State Fire Marshal.

1.6 WARRANTY

A. Special Warranty: Manufacturer agrees to repair or replace fire-alarm system equipment and components that fail in materials or workmanship within specified warranty period.

1. Warranty Extent: All equipment and components not covered in the Maintenance Service Agreement.

2. Warranty Period: Five years from date of Substantial Completion.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

A. Noncoded system dedicated to fire-alarm service only.

B. All components provided shall be listed for use with the selected system.

C. Electrical Components, Devices, and Accessories: Listed and labeled as defined in NFPA 70, by a qualified testing agency, and marked for intended location and application.

2.2 SYSTEMS OPERATIONAL DESCRIPTION

A. Fire-alarm signal initiation shall be by one or more of the following devices:

1. Manual stations.

2. Heat detectors.

3. Smoke detectors.

4. Duct smoke detectors.

5. Carbon monoxide detectors.

B. Fire-alarm signal shall initiate the following actions:

1. Continuously operate alarm notification appliances.

2. Identify alarm zone at fire-alarm control unit and remote annunciators.

3. Transmit an alarm signal to the remote alarm receiving station.

4. Switch heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning equipment controls to fire-alarm mode.

C. System trouble signal initiation shall be by one or more of the following devices and actions:

1. Open circuits, shorts, and grounds in designated circuits.

2. Opening, tampering with, or removing alarm-initiating and supervisory signal-initiating devices.

3. Loss of primary power at fire-alarm control unit.

4. Ground or a single break in internal circuits of fire-alarm control unit.

5. Abnormal ac voltage at fire-alarm control unit.

6. Break in standby battery circuitry.

7. Failure of battery charging.

8. Abnormal position of any switch at fire-alarm control unit or annunciator.

D. System Trouble and Supervisory Signal Actions:

1. Initiate notification appliances.

2. Annunciate at fire-alarm control unit and remote annunciators.

2.3 FIRE-ALARM CONTROL UNIT

C. Alphanumeric Display and System Controls: Display alarm, supervisory, and component status messages and the programming and control menu.

1. Annunciator and Display: Liquid-crystal type, two lines and 80 characters, minimum.

2. Annunciator color shall be white, grey, black, or off-white in color, unless otherwise prohibited by any applicable building code.

D. Circuits: To be installed according to applicable building codes and manufacturers recommendations.

2.5 SYSTEM SMOKE DETECTORS

A. Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements, available manufacturers offering products that may be incorporated into the Work include, but are not limited to the following:

B. General Requirements for System Smoke Detectors:

1. Operating at manufacturers recommended voltage.

2. Detectors shall be hard wired per manufacturers recommendations, and meeting all applicable building codes.

3. Self-Restoring: Detectors do not require resetting or readjustment after actuation to restore them to normal operation.

4. Integral Visual-Indicating Light: LED type, indicating detector has operated.

C. Photoelectric Smoke Detectors: Comply with UL 268.

D. Duct Smoke Detectors: Photoelectric type complying with UL 268A.

1. Remote indication station.

2. Weatherproof Duct Housing Enclosure: NEMA 250, Type 4X; NRTL listed for use with the supplied detector for smoke detection in HVAC system ducts. Must be compatible with entire system components.

3. Sampling Tubes: Design and dimensions as recommended by manufacturer for specific duct size, air velocity, and installation conditions where applied.

2.6 CARBON MONOXIDE DETECTORS

A. Description: Listed for connection to fire-alarm system.

1. Mounting: Adapter plate for outlet box mounting on roof beams. Contractor to supply and install the outlet boxes for mounting.

2. Detector shall provide a means to test by introducing test carbon monoxide into the sensing cell.

3. Detector shall provide alarm contacts and trouble contacts.

4. Detector shall send trouble alarm when nearing end-of-life, power supply problems, or internal faults.

5. Detector shall be listed to comply with UL 2075.

6. Detectors shall be located, mounted, and wired according to manufacturer's written instructions.

7. Test button simulates an alarm condition.

2.7 HEAT DETECTORS

A. Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements, available manufacturers offering products that may be incorporated into the Work include, but are not limited to the following:

1. Fire-Lite Alarms; Honeywell International, Inc.

2. Siemens Industry, Inc.; Fire Safety Division.

3. System Sensor; Honeywell International, Inc.

B. General Requirements for Heat Detectors: Comply with UL 521.

C. Heat Detector, Combination Type: Actuated by either a fixed temperature or a rate of rise.

1. Mounting: Adapter plate for outlet box mounting. Contractor to also supply and install outlet boxes.

2.8 NOTIFICATION APPLIANCES

A. Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements, available manufacturers offering products that may be incorporated into the Work include, but are not limited to the following:

B. General Requirements for Notification Appliances: Connected to notification-appliance signal circuits, zoned as indicated, equipped for mounting as indicated, and with screw terminals for system connections.

1. Combination Devices: Factory-integrated audible and visible devices in a single-mounting assembly, equipped for mounting as indicated, and with screw terminals for system connections.

C. Horns: Electric-vibrating-polarized type, 24-V dc; with provision for housing the operating mechanism behind a grille. Comply with UL 464.

D. Visible Notification Appliances: Xenon strobe lights complying with UL 1971, with clear or nominal white polycarbonate lens mounted on an aluminum faceplate. The word "FIRE" is engraved in minimum 1-inch- (25-mm-) high letters on the lens.

1. Mounting: Wall mounted unless otherwise indicated.

2. Flashing shall be in a temporal pattern, synchronized with other units.

3. Strobe Leads: Factory connected to screw terminals.

4. Mounting Faceplate: Factory finished, white (unless unavailable or prohibited by code).

2.9 REMOTE ANNUNCIATOR

A. Description: Annunciator functions shall match those of fire-alarm control unit for alarm, supervisory, and trouble indications. Manual switching functions shall match those of fire-alarm control unit, including acknowledging, silencing, resetting, and testing.

1. Mounting: Surface cabinet, NEMA 250, Type 1.

B. Display Type and Functional Performance: Alphanumeric display and LED indicating lights shall match those of fire-alarm control unit. Provide controls to acknowledge, silence, reset, and test functions for alarm, supervisory, and trouble signals.

2.10 DIGITAL ALARM COMMUNICATOR TRANSMITTER

A. Digital alarm communicator transmitter shall be acceptable to the remote central station and shall comply with UL 632.

B. Functional Performance: Unit shall receive an alarm, supervisory, or trouble signal from fire-alarm control unit and automatically capture one telephone line(s) and dial a preset number for a remote central station. When contact is made with central station(s), signals shall be transmitted.

If service online is interrupted for longer than 45 seconds, transmitter shall initiate a local trouble signal and transmit the signal indicating loss of telephone line to the remote alarm receiving station over the remaining line. Transmitter shall automatically report telephone service restoration to the central station. If service is lost on both telephone lines, transmitter shall initiate the local trouble signal.

C. Local functions and display at the digital alarm communicator transmitter shall include the following:

1. Verification that telephone lines are available.

2. Programming device.

3. LED display.

4. Manual test report function and manual transmission clear indication.

5. Communications failure with the central station or fire-alarm control unit.

D. Secondary Power: Integral rechargeable battery and automatic charger.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 EQUIPMENT INSTALLATION

A. Comply with NFPA 72, NFPA 101, and requirements of authorities having jurisdiction for installation and testing of fire-alarm equipment. Install all electrical wiring to comply with requirements in NFPA 70 including, but not limited to, Article 760, "Fire Alarm Systems."

B. Connecting to Existing Equipment: Verify that existing fire-alarm system is operational before making changes or connections.

C. Install wall-mounted equipment, with tops of cabinets not more than 78 inches (1980 mm) above the finished floor.

1. Comply with requirements for seismic-restraint devices specified in Section 260548.16 "Seismic Controls for Electrical Systems."

D. Manual Fire-Alarm Boxes:

1. Install manual fire-alarm box in the normal path of egress within 60 inches (1520 mm) of the exit doorway.

2. Mount manual fire-alarm box on a background of a contrasting color.

3. The operable part of manual fire-alarm box shall be between 42 inches (1060 mm) and 48 inches (1220 mm) above floor level. All devices shall be mounted at the same height unless otherwise indicated.

E. Smoke- or Heat-Detector Spacing: Comply with NFPA 72.

F. Duct Smoke Detectors: Comply with NFPA 72 and NFPA 90A. Install sampling tubes so they extend the full width of duct. Tubes more than 36 inches (9100 mm) long shall be supported at both ends.

G. Remote Status and Alarm Indicators: Install in a visible location near each smoke detector, sprinkler water-flow switch, and valve-tamper switch that is not readily visible from normal viewing position.

H. Audible Alarm-Indicating Devices: Install not less than 6 inches (150 mm) below the ceiling.

Install bells and horns on flush-mounted back boxes with the device-operating mechanism concealed behind a grille. Install all devices at the same height unless otherwise indicated.

I. Visible Alarm-Indicating Devices: Install adjacent to each alarm bell or alarm horn and at least 6 inches (150 mm) below the ceiling. Install all devices at the same height unless otherwise indicated.

3.2 PATHWAYS

A. Pathways shall be installed in conduit approved by NFPA 72 and all applicable building code.

B. Exposed conduits shall be painted to match surface mounted on, including wood paneling.

3.3 CONNECTIONS

A. All connections shall be compliant with NFPA 72 and all applicable building codes.

3.4 FIELD QUALITY CONTROL

A. Field tests shall be witnessed by authorities having jurisdiction including COR, West Virginia State Fire Marshal and US Forest Service Safety Officer.

B. Perform the following tests and inspections with the assistance of a factory-authorized service representative:

1. Visual Inspection: Conduct the visual inspection prior to testing.

a. Inspection shall be based on completed record Drawings and system documentation that is required by NFPA 72 in Chapter 10 "Fundamentals," Section 10.18.21 "Completion Documents, Preparation."

b. Comply with NFPA 72, Chapter 14, "Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance," Section 14.3 "Inspection" and the "Visual Inspection Frequencies" Table; retain the "Initial/Reacceptance" column and list only the installed components.

2. System Testing: Comply with NFPA 72, Chapter 14, "Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance," Section 14.4 "Testing" and the "Test Methods" Table.

C. Fire-alarm system will be considered defective if it does not pass tests and inspections.

D. Prepare test and inspection reports.

E. Maintenance Test and Inspection: Perform tests and inspections listed for weekly, monthly, quarterly, and semiannual periods. Use forms developed for initial tests and inspections.

F. Annual Test and Inspection: One year after date of Substantial Completion, test fire-alarm system complying with the visual and testing inspection requirements in NFPA 72. Use forms developed for initial tests and inspections.

3.5 DEMONSTRATION
