About this file

This document is a Federal Specification for Ion Exchange Resins (O-I-1279B), dated June 30, 1993, superseding a previous version from November 24, 1980. The specification covers synthetic styrene-divnylbenzene organic and cation exchange resins used to demineralize or treat water by replacing negative or positive ions. The document defines three classes of ion exchange resins:

Class 1 - Sulfonate cross-linked styrene-divinylbenzene cation exchange resin in hydrogen form

Class 2 - Trimethylamine type styrene-divinylbenzene quaternary anion exchange resin in hydroxide form

Class 3 - Mixed bed resin combining a hydrogen form cation resin and hydroxide form anion resin

The specification provides detailed technical requirements for each resin class, including solids percentage, particle size, salt-splitting capacity, impurity limits, and testing procedures. It also includes packaging specifications, requiring resins to be furnished in 1-cubic-foot quantities in double polyethylene bags, with specific marking and preservation instructions. The document is intended for use by all Federal agencies and was prepared by the Naval Sea Systems Command with GSA-FSS as the civil agency coordinating activity.
