About this file
This is a Section C Description/Specification/Work Statement for the Jackalope Timber Sale, an updated document dated February 26, 2026, issued by the U.S. Forest Service (USFS).
The contract scope involves timber marking and volume estimation services across approximately 534 acres in Northern Hardwoods forest types, divided into Payment Units 01-09. The work encompasses hardwood single-tree selection in uneven-aged stands containing mixed Northern Hardwood species with both pulpwood and sawtimber products. Contractors must mark and cruise all trees designated for removal using the Sample Tree cruising method (STR), which requires measuring a specified proportion of trees in the sub-population while tallying remaining removal trees as count trees. Every tree marked for removal must be physically visited and marked. The USFS will separately mark all leave trees and Road Right-of-Way units at a later date; contractors should mark/cruise trees up to the edge of existing road clearing in units with roads. Government-furnished blue tree marking paint will be issued and returned by appointment only at the Watersmeet Ranger District Office through a designated paint custodian, who will be identified at the pre-work meeting. The sale site is located west of Watersmeet, Michigan, accessible from US-2 approximately 23.8 miles west, with the sale area on the south side of the highway.
