SPECIFICATIONS
FRP BRIDGE SUBSTRUCTURE KITS
REDWOOD NATIONAL & STATE PARKS
1. DESCRIPTION
The National Park Service, Redwood National Park, Crescent City, California, has a requirement for the design and fabrication of nine pultruded fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) simply supported, single-span bridge sub-structures delivered ready for assembly, per the specifications, to Redwood National Park.
This work does NOT include decking, posts and rails and associated hardware. However, the design should include loading and calculation for required to support the handrail connections and attachments on the structure. The government shall furnish materials and install the decking, posts, and handrails, which will be made of recycled plastic lumber. The decking will be made of 2x6-inch boards, posts will be 4x6x62 ½-inches, 48- inches above decking), and the railing will be 2x6-inch, with 4 rails on each side.
The manufacturer shall provide all fasteners, hardware, and anchor clips, which shall be Hot-Dipped Galvanized ASTM/ A307 Steel. The design and fabrication shall be in a simple manner, such that it will allow disassembly for shipping, and allow for the Park to manually manipulate and transport bridge components to the trail bridge site for re-assembly by manual labor crews with hand tools. The color shall be the standard color used by the manufacturer.
2. SPECIFICATIONS
A. Four (4) prefabricated substructure kits made of FRP I-beams designed to support the decking, posts, and railing components. These will be replacing the existing failing bridges. These will have no fewer than four I-beams which will be no less than nor more than 1-foot high, to allow for secure attachment of posts. Include lateral connecting bracing, at a minimum at each end, and as needed, depending on length, to minimize harmonics, side-sway, flex, and bounce. The substructures shall be simply supported on Government-furnished large dimensional recycled plastic lumber footings (12-inches x 16-inches x 68-inches). Anchor clips will be secured by lag bolts.
1. One (1) 18-feet long x 52 inches wide
2. Three (3) 24-feet long x 52 inches wide
B. Five (5) bridge sub-structure kits, designed with 8 pairs of 8-inch deep C-channel components to be bolted together to create an I-beam style stringer structure, engineered to meet specifications. These structures will be used to replace the original failing puncheon bridge structures, which will not have posts and rails. These will be constructed with 4 pairs of 8 inch high C-channel to be bolted together to make an I-beam style stringer substructure. Include lateral connecting bracing, at a minimum at each end, and as needed, depending on length, to minimize, harmonics, side-sway, flex, and bounce. The substructures shall be simply supported on Government-furnished large dimensional recycled plastic lumber footings, (6-inches x 12-inches x 68-inches). Anchor clips will be secured by lag bolts.
1. One (1) 6-foot 6-inches long x 56-inches wide
2. Two (2) 8-feet long x 56-inches wide
3. One (1) 9-feet long x 56-inches wide
4. One (1) 10-feet long x 56-inches wide

3. ENGINEERING REQUIREMENTS
A. Each bridge structure shall be designed and stamped by a professional structural engineer registered in the State of California. Include all applicable codes and design criteria (such as, not limited to, live load, dead load, wind loads, seismic loads, etc.)
4. DESIGN CRITERIA
A. The bridge width will be measured at the outside edge of I-beam to outside edge of I-beam.
B. The bridge length will be measured from end of beam to end of beam.
C. I-beams will have pre-drilled holes to properly secure posts with 1/2 inch dia. bolts and post locations being approximately 4-feet apart.
D. Allowable Stress Design Method -Safety Factor of 3 E. Pedestrian Live Load – minimum of 85 PSF F. Wind load – minimum of 35 PSF
5. SUBMITTALS
A. Shop Drawings: Provide shop/schematic drawings for review and acceptance. Provide design criteria, component dimensions, layout, assembly instructions and PE stamp.
B. Warranty: Provide manufacturer warranty for materials.
C. Spare Parts: Provide (4) sets of spare parts of each type of fastener or hardware.
D. Quality Control: The manufacturer shall fabricate and assemble the bridge structures to verify assembly, component size/type and fit are accurate.
6. DELIVERY INFORMATION
Disassemble and ship all materials, fasteners, etc. to Redwood National Park, North Operations Center, 500 Aubell Lane, Crescent City, CA 95531. Delivery shall be arranged to occur during the hours of operation, excluding federal holidays, Monday to Thursday, 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM.
