Specifications For Procure Of The Brand Name “Instruments Inc” Model S16-4LF Power Amplifier, Part Number B155001-02 In Support Of The
Naval Post Graduate School (NPS) in Monterey, CA
Item No.
Qty Unit Manufacturer (If known)
Part Number (If known)
Description
1 1 EA Instruments Inc B155001‐02 S16-4LF with seismic rack option added
NPS desires to procure one 8 kW low frequency power amplifier in FY24. The amplifier will be used to provide electrical power to underwater sound projectors. The projectors will be connected to the power amplifier by electrical cable.
The projectors to be driven are electro-acoustic underwater transducers. The transducers will transmit acoustic signals at frequencies consistent with their respective bandwidths for extended periods. Considering the extended transmission periods, the amplifier must be rated for continuous operation at full power.
Several acoustic transmission types will be used. A typical transmission is a phase-shift modulated, linear sequence derived from a digital code. When a digit changes from a "1" to a "0" or from a "0" to a "1", there is an approximate 90-degree phase shift (direction reversal of a CW in the time domain waveform) of the 75 Hz center frequency. It takes approximately 20 minutes to transmit the code, which is repeated for up to 96 hours at a time. The power spectrum of the transmitted signal is a sinc-squared function, its mainlobe is centered approximately at 75 Hz. The spectral nulls to the left and right side of the mainlobe approximately are located at 38 and 112 Hz, thus reducing the drive voltage at frequencies away from the center frequency. The 0.5 magnitude (-6 dB in Power) roll off frequencies nominally are 50 Hz and 100 Hz (Fig. 1).
The amplifier shall be a class-D S16-4 switching amplifier designed to power reactive loads and to not be damaged or overheat by a short circuit. The design shall be all solid-state construction with thermal sensors on all major heat sinks. The output stage shall be current limited and short circuit proof. Indicator lights shall be provided for over-voltage, over-current and blown fuse conditions, in addition to remote analysis (see Section 4). The full rated output shall be selectable in 4 voltage output steps from approximately 424 to 1200 volts RMS to accommodate the various transducers that will be used. The output voltage taps, and the gate signal, shall be selected by switches on the front panel or remotely from a computer interface located on the back panel. There shall also be a front panel inhibit switch that will manually override the gate signal as a safety feature.

Electrical Characteristics
Frequency range: 50 Hz to 2 kHz or more (full output voltage for MLS, see Section 1.3). The lower end for CW full output voltage is 25 Hz.
Input voltage: 1.0-volt RMS signal input shall produce 1200 volts RMS output
Input impedance: 10 Kohms
Output voltage taps: 424, 600, 848, 1200 (volts RMS +/-10%)
Max. output voltage: 1200 volts RMS
Max. output current: 5 amperes RMS (at 1200 volts RMS)
RMS noise relative to maximum output: -80 dB
Distortion (THD): 2% or less over full frequency range
Gate signal: LV TTL level (3V) with range: 2-5 volts
Output monitor sensitivity: Voltage: 5 mV/Volt (for +/- 10 V ADC) Current: 100 mV/Ampere
Ambient temperature: 0-40 degrees C (32-104 degrees F)
Input power: 60 Hz, 3-phase, 208V
Design and Construction
Packaging: The amplifier shall be packaged in a manner equivalent to a standard 19-inch electronics enclosure with 4 locking casters at the bottom. The overall height of the housing shall be nominally 40U or nominally 80 inches. Extra rack-shelf space above the amplifier is desirable if the amplifier is smaller than the internal housing height.
Over-temperature protection: The design shall incorporate temperature sensing thermistors to sense and automatically limit the temperature of the power output stages.
Status indicators: Front panel lights shall be provided to indicate a failed output stage, or an over-voltage, over-current or over-temperature condition.
Operator controls: All operator controls shall be located on the front panel. The controls shall be clearly labeled to identify function, designation, and operation.
Input/output connectors: Voltage and current monitor jacks shall be located on both the front and real panels. The input signal and gate connectors shall be located on the rear panel via circular MS connectors (e.g., 2 conductors shielded or triax-cable). The output signal also is provided via a circular MS connector. Quantity 2 of the input MS mating connector with a 10 ft cable to BNC connectors will be provided. Quantity 2 of the output MS connector with a 10 ft cable undermined (pigtail) is provided.
Remote selection of voltage tabs is accomplished via a circular MS connector located on the rear panel of the unit with LV TLL (3V). Quantity 4 of MS mating connectors with a 10 ft cable to BNC will be provided. This MS connector includes remote selection and remote monitoring (see 4.7)
Remote monitoring of Temperature limit, current limit, voltage limit, blown fuse AC power available (wall breaker), supply on (DC available), E-stop OK (front panel emergency shutoff switch), common return, and over voltage shutdown are provided via circular MS connector (the same connector as in section 4.6).
Circuitry and components: All solid-state construction with all components de- rated to provide the required reliability for continuous output at full rated power.
Fabrication: Printed circuit boards to be used where applicable with output power stages on pluggable boards.
Case, chassis, and fasteners: All materials and coatings shall be consistent with the corrosive properties of a near-ocean environment.
The amplifier will be housed in a rack to protect it against shipboard vibration in accordance with MIL-STD-167.
Documentation
The manufacturer shall provide a technical manual for the amplifier. The manual shall contain all performance data acquired during acceptance tests as well as a warranty phrase and quality assurance certificate of compliance with all requirements of the purchase order.
Other technical information shall include an operator's section that details all controls and indicators and explains the tum-on/tum-off procedures recommended by the manufacturer.
Sections on the theory of operation of the amplifier section and the power supply section shall be included complete with all pertinent electrical schematics and drawings.
Troubleshooting and adjustment sections and a section containing a list of all plug-in circuits and board replacement procedures shall be included. Where applicable, mechanical drawings of chassis and front panel controls shall be included.
Warranty and Repair Services
The manufacturer shall warrant the amplifier for 5 years starting at the time of delivery.
The warranty shall include the repair or replacement of any part that proves to be defective during the warranty period if the failure is not due to damage caused by misuse or accident.
Repair services: Repair services must be available from the manufacturer or an alternate source for a minimum of 10 years after the purchase date.
