About this file
The document is a Salient Characteristics specification for a 3/4-way pad mounted high voltage switchgear enclosure for the Department of the Air Force Air Mobility Command. The switchgear is designed for 15.5 kV electrical systems with a 12.5kA short-circuit rating, constructed from 304L stainless steel and coated olive green. Key specifications include a fault interrupter type with SF6 gas insulated vacuum fault interruption, 15,000 volt nominal rating, 600 amp main bus continuous rating, and a compartment configuration of 1 input load interrupter switch and 3 output fault interrupter switches.
The enclosure is critical for electrical system safety and maintenance, providing protection for electricians during power outages and utility work. Physical design requirements include 305L stainless steel construction, 600 amp rated bushings with removable silver-plated copper threaded studs, viewing windows for switch position verification, removable panels for cable installation, and comprehensive grounding capabilities. The switchgear is part of solicitation FA441825Q0008 for the 628th Civil Engineering Squadron, specifically seeking one (1) 15kV pad-mounted switchgear unit to support base electrical infrastructure and operational reliability.

SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS
3 / 4-WAY PAD MOUNTED ENCLOSURE
I. GENERAL OVERVIEW.
This memo outlines the key characteristics of a pad mounted high voltage switch enclosure designed for 15.5 KV electrical systems, with a 12.5kA short-circuit rating. It is constructed from 304L stainless steel for durability and corrosion resistance and coated in olive green to blend with environmental surroundings and meet aesthetic requirements.
II. SPECIFICATIONS.
At a minimum the equipment and accessories shall possess the following specifications:
Quantity: One (1) each.
Fault interrupter type SF6 gas insulated vacuum fault interruption
Voltage Rating:
- Nominal kV: 15,000 Volts
- Main Bus Continuous Amps: 600 Amp
Compartment Configuration:
Input: 1 Load interrupter switch Output: 3 fault interrupter switch
III. APPLICATIONS:
This enclosed switchgear are essential for minimizing the exposure of electricians to high voltage hazards during power outages and utility maintenance tasks. Additionally, these switchgears play a crucial role in isolating grid faults, facilitating the back-feeding of circuits, and enabling loop configurations for facilities or circuits undergoing upgrades or repairs. Their deployment ensures not only the safety of personnel but also the efficiency and reliability of critical electrical operations during maintenance and upgrade activities.
IV. PHYSICAL DESIGN:
The following design characteristics are critical to supports the seamless integration of the switchgear within existing base power grid.
Enclosure Type: Pad-Mount style switchgear.
Material: Pad mounted switchgears must be constructed of 305L stainless steel and corrosion proof hardware.
Switch Compartments:
- Equipped with 600 amp rated bushings with removable silver-plated copper threaded studs.
- Provide parking stands adjacent to each bushing to accommodate horizontal feedthroughs and standoff insulators.
- Provided viewing windows within the termination compartments to allow visual verification of switch position, observation of switch-position open/close labels and inspection of blown-fuse indicators on power fuses.
- Removable panels to provide access to install elbows and cables
- 305L Stainless steel construction
- Open/Close/Ground positions with padlock positions
Enclosure grounding:
- Must have a grounding point across the full width of the fuse compartments for connecting of cable concentric neutrals.
