About this file

The document AR-PD-176 is a detailed purchase description for the M320 Grenadier Sighting System (GSS), a targeting optic designed for the M320/M320A1 Grenade Launcher and compatible with M16A4 and M4A1 weapons. The specification outlines comprehensive technical requirements including optical performance, night capabilities, environmental durability, and operational characteristics. Key specifications include a unity (non-magnified) sight with an illuminated red reticle, near-infrared aiming and illumination lasers, integrated ballistic compensation, and the ability to withstand extreme temperatures from -40°C to +60°C. The GSS must meet rigorous military standards for reliability, surviving 1,500 mean rounds between essential function failures and maintaining zero accuracy through multiple weapon firing cycles.

The document specifies detailed performance metrics such as photopic and near-infrared light transmission, beam divergence for lasers, power requirements using CR2032 or CR123 batteries, and compatibility with existing weapon accessories. Physical requirements mandate a lightweight design under 11 ounces, a coyote brown color, and the ability to function while wearing protective gear. Environmental testing protocols cover shock, vibration, water immersion, temperature extremes, humidity, and chemical exposure. The specification is prepared by the U.S. Army RDECOM-ARDEC (Research, Development and Engineering Command - Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center) at Picatinny Arsenal, New Jersey, indicating this is a precision military optics procurement effort.
