About this file
This is an Approved Tree Species list document issued by the City of Pittsburgh Department of Public Works, Forestry Division, updated August 2021, in conjunction with a pre-qualified contractor solicitation for tree planting services. The document establishes approved species for restoration projects within Pittsburgh and specifies planting composition requirements: a minimum of 20% of trees in any planting must be conifers, no more than 30% of any plant family, no more than 20% of any plant genus, and no more than 10% of any single plant species. The approved list includes over 80 native and adapted tree and shrub species organized by Latin name with corresponding common names and categorized by type (tree or shrub), habitat suitability (wet sites, upland areas, poor soil tolerance, and salt tolerance), and fruit/nut production characteristics. Species range from common deciduous trees such as sugar maple and white oak to specialty species such as pawpaw, yellowwood, and dawn redwood.
The City of Pittsburgh Office of Management & Budget is currently accepting pre-qualified contractor applications for tree planting services under an initial contract period commencing upon execution and terminating June 30, 2030. All bid submissions must be submitted electronically to contracts@pittsburghpa.gov in the form of a completed PQMA packet; responses submitted through OpenGov Procurement will not be accepted. Contractors bidding on tree planting projects must comply with the approved species list and associated planting composition requirements to ensure diversity and appropriate species selection for Pittsburgh's urban forestry restoration initiatives.
