About this file

This document is an appendix to the DYS Arts Initiative, which outlines the ways the arts can support young people in the care of the Department of Youth Services (DYS). The initiative seeks to create opportunities for youth, families, and staff to imagine and dream, experiment creatively, and explore their interests and build skills for future careers. The arts are seen as a necessity alongside STEM, language arts, and state standards, providing an arena for building soft skills while exercising innovation and problem-solving. The initiative aims to center social justice and healing by providing platforms for youth voice and story, as well as support opportunities for understanding health and wellness. Consistent program evaluation and youth feedback are emphasized as pivotal for program quality and offerings.

The document highlights research on the transformative effects of the arts on physical and emotional wellness, social and cultural networks of support, enriching education and academics, and employment opportunities. It further outlines the DYS Arts Initiative's goals to work with enthusiastic arts partners to leverage the creative process as a vehicle for exploration, discovery, and problem-solving, and to support the ideas and research presented by the Center for Promise.
