About this file

This request for proposal seeks an atomization system capable of producing spherical refractory metal powders suitable for additive manufacturing. Key requirements include a plasma-based system producing powders with a D50 less than 50 micrometers and D90 less than 100 micrometers from feedstock including pure tungsten at rates over 1 kilogram per hour. The system must attain vacuum levels below 1e-4 torr and heat atomization gas to over 500 degrees Celsius with a water-cooled hearth and chamber. Additional specifications cover system dimensions, controls, and the inclusion of installation and training services. Proposals are due in response to solicitation number RFP-A24-0958 issued by the Ames Laboratory of the Department of Energy to acquire goods and services for a refractory metal atomizer.

Appendix C – Specifications dated 1/2024 Rev. 0

Refractory Metal Atomizer

System Requirements:

1. Plasma-based metal gas atomization system capable of generating spherical powders suitable for laser-based powder-bed additive manufacturing from high-melting temperature (refractory) metal feedstock up-to and including pure tungsten (melting temperatures >3000°C), with a D50 less than or equal to 50 µm and D90 less than or equal to 100 µm.

2. Capable of semi/continuous feeding with processing rates of 1+ kg per hour (not pour rate, indicating average powder production rate) of refractory metal feedstock (ingot feedstock only, no wire).

3. Capable of vacuum levels in the atomization chamber of 1e-4 torr or better.

4. Capable of atomization gas heating to 500°C or higher.

5. Includes water-cooled hearth and atomization chamber.

6. Replaceable Cu melting hearth

7. Maximum system vertical height of 22 feet; preferred footprint is 16 feet by 16 feet

8. Non-explosion rated atomization chamber

9. Pressure relief and burst discs required

10. All tube sections must be shorter than 36 inches

11. Must specify if plasma is transferred or non-transferred arc type

12. Melting chamber must be 30+ inches in diameter

13. Mezzanine or worker access platform must be included

14. Power supplies for gas heating and plasma torch(es)

15. Water interlocks for power supplies must be included

16. Remote/automated control of valves and melt pouring

17. Remote/automated control of plasma torch(es)

18. Please include line item(s) for installation and training time on-site

19. Please include estimated shipping costs
