About this file

This document is a Statement of Work (SOW) for the Advanced Photon Source Upgrade (APS-U) project, which is requesting proposals for the design, manufacture, testing, and delivery of compound refractive lenses (CRLs) to be used at the CHEX beamline.

The SOW details the specifications for the required CRLs, including dimensions, geometric clear aperture, radius of curvature, and quality assurance requirements. It also outlines the proposed schedule, with delivery of all lenses required within 16 weeks of contract award. The vendor is asked to provide an initial meeting, monthly progress reports, and a shipping and packaging plan. The lenses will undergo acceptance testing and characterization at the APS.

The related federal contract opportunity is a solicitation for the CRLs, with a solicitation number of 4-B169-Q-00564-00. The solicitation is being issued by the Department of Energy Office of Science and requests that vendors provide a published price list, complete a pre-award information form, and verify the country of origin and lead time for the CRLs. Any additional discounts or applicability of GSA contract pricing should also be included in the vendor's response.

Project Description Background The Advanced Photon Source Upgrade Project (APS-U) is planning a storage-ring upgrade that will reduce the electron-beam emittance by a factor of ~75. This ultra-low emittance is achieved by replacing the present storage ring lattice with a multi-bend achromat (MBA) lattice. The MBA lattice will increase the x-ray coherent fraction by two orders of magnitude and decrease the horizontal source size by a factor of ~20. In addition, the APS-U is planning to build eight new featured beamlines and make optics upgrades to many others.

To take full advantage of these exciting new x-ray source properties, high-quality state-of-the art x-ray optics are a necessity. This SOW describes the requirements for CRLs to be used with transfocators and fixed cassette compound refractive lens systems at the CHEX beamline. This SOW is a request for proposals for the design, manufacture, testing, and delivery of compound refractive lenses.

The vendor is also welcome to propose an alternative schedule for providing the required lenses.

Reports and Documentation The following documents and reports are to be provided at the following stages:

Initial Meeting

· A schedule consistent with above milestones and schedule Monthly Progress Reports

· Brief monthly progress reports will be submitted to APS. These reports may be a bulleted list in an email that details the manufacturing progress Shipping

· Shipping and packaging plan one month prior to shipping for each delivery phase Lens Specifications Dimensions All lenses should be doubled sided and made from diamond substrates with a starting thickness of 1 mm.

Geometric clear aperture The diameter of the geometric aperture will be larger than 620 µm, and 870 µm for the parabolic lens with the apex radius of curvature of 100 µm, and 200 µm, respectively. Any lens with an apex radius of curvature larger than 400 µm will have a clear aperture larger than 1200 µm diameter.

Radius of Curvature The best-fit parabolic apex radius of any lens’s curvature will deviate < ±2.5% from the specified value over the clear aperture of the lens.

Minimum thickness (distance between apices) A minimum thickness <25 µm for any lenses is required.

Defects and Cracks The lenses will be free of defects or cracks as can be detected by the measurements described in 5.1.

Thickness Error After removing best-fit parabola as measured over the central two-third of the diameter of any lens, the RMS thickness error will be < 1.0 µm Optical axis The optical axis to frame center tolerance will be < ±5 µm.

Ventilation and alignment hole Each lens mount will have a ventilation hole with a diameter > 1 mm for alignment.

Quality Assurance The vendor shall adhere to all quality control requirements as specified in this document and the accompanying Quality Assurance Procurement Requirements Form ANL-407. Any deviations from this Statement of Work shall be approved in writing using an APS Upgrade Project Supplier Disposition Request form included in the Argonne purchase order.

Packing and Shipping The vendor is responsible for proper packing and shipping all components. The compound refractive lenses will be used in an ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) environment and shall remain UHV clean during shipping.

Each shipping container shall also contain the quality assurance records specified in the ANL-407 form.

For shipping from other countries, the use of an experienced customs agent or customs bonded freight forwarder is highly encouraged.

Compound Refractive Len Acceptance Tests Lens Characterization

Each lens provided by the vendor will be characterized at the APS using grating or speckle-based at-wavelength metrology. These measurements will provide thickness profiles of the individual lenses with <3 mm spatial resolution and a thickness error sensitivity to better than 0.1 um. Best-fit parabola will be applied to the thickness profile of each lens over the specified clear aperture. These measurements will be used to evaluate if the lenses specifications have been met. The lens rejection and replacement rate will be capped at 10% of the total lens order. Differential Phases Figure 2: Schematic of CRL measurement systems and typical results.

APS Coordinate System Figure 3: The APS coordinate system used in this document.

The coordinate system for all APS beamlines is shown above in Figure 1. The positive Z direction points along the beam direction. The positive Y direction is a vertical axis pointing upward. The positive X direction is pointing outboard, away from the storage ring. θX, θY, and θZ are the rotations about X, Y, and Z axis, respectively.
