About this file

This is a Technical Specification document for Anne Arundel Community College (AACC) in Maryland, specifically detailing requirements for custom recessed display case fabrication and installation within the Henry L. Dragun Science Building. The project involves the procurement of an operable glass door panel display system featuring frameless construction with 12mm low-iron laminated safety glass panels, integrated LED lighting (2700-3500 Kelvin color temperature), adjustable glass shelving with a 40-pound weight capacity per shelf, concealed hardware with pin tumbler cylinder locks, and interior finishes utilizing clear-finished birch veneer plywood. The display cases must comply with ASTM E 84 surface-burning characteristics standards (Flame-Spread Index of 25 or less and Smoke-Developed Index of 50 or less) and feature dual-actuated aircraft aluminum hinges that operate without requiring lubrication. The basis of design specifies a Recessed, Custom Wall Display system by Helmut Guenschel, Inc., or approved equal by Schmitz & Schmitz. Installation is contingent upon spaces being fully enclosed, weathertight, and with temporary HVAC systems operational at occupancy levels.

The specification requires comprehensive pre-installation submittals including product data, shop drawings with detailed construction plans, electrical characteristics for lighting, and finish samples. Exterior panel rails are to be primed and painted with two-component polyurethane in a color to be determined, while optional passive humidity control via desiccant drawers is available. The contractor must verify actual opening dimensions through field measurements prior to fabrication, conduct a preinstallation conference at the project site, and provide maintenance data for inclusion in project manuals. Upon completion, all doors must be adjusted to operate smoothly with accurate contact points, and factory-applied finishes must be touched up to restore any damaged areas. No specific pricing terms, award dates, response deadlines, or contract renewal options are detailed within this technical specification section.

1.6 PROJECT CONDITIONS

A. Environmental Limitations: Do not deliver or install display system for indoor installations until spaces are enclosed and weathertight, wet-work in spaces is complete and dry, work above ceilings is complete, and temporary HVAC system is operating and maintaining ambient temperature and humidity conditions at occupancy levels during the remainder of the construction period.

B. Field Measurements: Verify actual dimensions of openings for display system by field measurements before fabrication.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 MANUFACTURERS

A. Source Limitations: Obtain display system from single source from single manufacturer.

2.2 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS

A. Surface-Burning Characteristics: Comply with ASTM E 84; testing by a qualified testing agency.

Identify products with appropriate markings of applicable testing agency.

1. Flame-Spread Index: 25 or less.

2. Smoke-Developed Index: 50 or less.

B. Electrical Components: Listed and labeled as defined in NFPA 70, by a qualified testing agency, and marked for intended location and application.

2.3 DISPLAY CASE

A. Basis of Design: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide Recessed, Custom Wall Display by Helmut Guenschel, Inc, or approved equal by Schmitz & Schmitz.

B. Operable glass door panel display frontage system including a structural frame

(steel “C” channel), top and bottom, operable hinged glass panels and appropriate mounting hardware; dust minimizing seal package is to be included.

1. Frameless construction with no intermediate vertical support.

2. In closed position, adjacent glass panels shall remain in one plane. Adjustable alignment pins shall assure that the glass is properly closed and positioned.

3. Structural components shall not be visible, fasteners shall be concealed and locking is provided by means of pin tumbler cylinder locks.

4. Interior Panel Finishes: Wood Laminate Panels. Layout as indicated on drawings.

a. Panel laminate as selected by Architect.

5. The glass panels will be 12mm thick low-iron laminated safety glass (anti-reflective glass is optional at an additional charge) mounted into aluminum rails top and bottom;

vertical glass edges are precision-ground and polished.

6. Laminated glass for display doors in lieu of tempered: Important safety feature which protects both building occupants and artifacts in the event of breakage. The interlayer between the lites is a natural UV filter, which will protect artifacts, documents and photographs from fading. Included seal package to make the display cases virtually dust and maintenance free, reducing requirements for interior cleaning.

C. Hinges: Dual actuated hinges manufactured from high-strength aircraft aluminum and requiring no lubrication. When unlocked, the door panel releases from the compression seal and rotates out and away from the display space providing full access. The pivot end of the panel does not rotate into the display space.

a. The operable door panels are equipped with heavy-duty hinges in high strength

aluminum alloy. In a closed position the hinges are completely concealed. Once the door is unlocked, the door panel is free to rotate out of the closed position without any part of the door rotating into the display space. (Note: a normal pivot-hinge requires that a portion of the door rotate into the display area). Upon closing the doors, adjustable alignment pins should assure that the individual panels are properly closed and positioned for perfect alignment.

D. Glass Shelves: Supported on adjustable shelf hanging rod or cable system, as determined by manufacturer and specified in specifications.

a. Shelf Depth: As Indicated on Drawings.

b. Shelf Capacity: Not to exceed 40 lb. of total weight (shelf and display items).

c. Number of Shelves (Vertically): As indicated on Drawings.
