CO (COR) and USFS-provided archaeologist to review requirements and plan the work.
B. EXCAVATION
1. Conserve topsoil for placement on embankments and fill areas where necessary to reduce erosion.
2. Excavate as required to accommodate the new construction. See SECTION C below for construction layout instructions.
3. Subsurface conditions are not well characterized, and bedrock may be encountered. This contract assumes bedrock is not present. If bedrock is encountered, notify CO to discuss government’s preference: shift building to avoid bedrock, or remove rock to depth as required.
4. Excavate material as required by the toilet vault manufacturer.

2. Uniformly grade areas within all work areas and establish natural transitions to adjacent undisturbed surfaces. Finish surfaces free from irregularities and abrupt changes in grade.
3. Grade areas adjacent to vault toilet and gravel access ramp to drain away and to prevent ponding. Maximum fill slope is 3H:1V. 2H:1V is acceptable where 3:1 will not catch existing ground.
E. COMPACTION
1. Moisten or dry aggregate to uniform moisture content suitable for compaction.
2. Compact under vault bottom and around vault sides as recommended by the manufacturer.
3. Compact the gravel access ramp with three passes of a whacker type mechanical compactor or until visible deformation ceases. The finished grade of the compacted aggregate shall not vary more than ½ inch. The compacted thickness shall not be consistently above or below the specified thickness.
4. Aggregate finishing for gravel access ramp: After compaction, water the aggregate surface thoroughly until fines have completely settled from the surface. Then remove loose aggregate and dispose of by scattering over gravel pad/spur shoulder. Add or remove aggregate material as necessary to achieve specified slopes and grades, and to provide a firm and stable surface.
