About this file

This Special Packaging Instruction (SPI) document details the packaging requirements for a rear axle assembly (National Stock Number 2520-01-577-1837) manufactured by JLG Industries. The document provides comprehensive instructions for preserving, protecting, and packaging the axle, including specific preservation methods for metal components, fluid filling procedures, and detailed blocking and bracing specifications. The packaging is designed for a military-grade shipping container with precise dimensional requirements, using wood blocking conforming to ASTM D6199 standards.

The packaging instructions specify multiple preservation steps, including applying preservatives to unpainted metal surfaces, filling the axle differential with operating fluid, and sealing all openings. The unit container must be marked with "REUSABLE CONTAINER. DO NOT DESTROY" in 1-inch black letters. The document includes detailed hardware specifications, such as the use of round head neck bolts, threaded rods, washers, and lag bolts for securing the axle to a wooden skid base. The packaging is designed to protect the axle during transportation, with careful attention to blocking placement, attachment methods, and overall structural integrity.
