AHRQ’s Opioid Research
1. Purpose/Objectives of Task Order
The purpose of this task order is to build on AHRQ’s previous work related to opioids, including opioid use disorder (OUD), implementation of medication-assisted treatments (MAT) in rural primary care settings, and the evidence and availability of tools needed to implement MAT. B Based on this information, AHRQ will be able to identify research gaps for the agency to consider funding in future research projects that supports its current mission and the HHS 5-point strategy plan.
With this (sample) Task Order, AHRQ is interested in knowing about new tools and methods for the prevention and treatment of opioid abuse that have become available since the research and practices described in the published environmental scans - Implementing Medication-
PEATOC IDIQ Page 12 of 83
Assisted Treatment for Opioid Use Disorder in Rural Primary Care: Environmental Scan Volume 1 and Volume 2 Tools and Resources. The objective is to identify gaps that exist in current research for the prevention of opioid abuse and treatment of opioid addiction in rural settings and new prevention and method treatments not captured in previous literature reviews in order to recommend future research efforts for AHRQ to consider.
The objectives are to identify new prevention strategies and methods of treatment not captured in previous AHRQ literature reviews and to identify research gaps AHRQ can consider for future funding efforts that aligns with its mission and the HHS 5-point strategy plan.
2. Background/References
The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s (AHRQ) mission is to produce evidence to make health care safer, higher quality, more accessible, equitable and affordable, and to work within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), health delivery systems, and partner with health care professions. AHRQ’s focus is on improving the quality and safety of the health care delivery system and the services that patients receive. The Agency achieves that goal by leveraging its unique core competencies in evidence-based research, practice improvement, and data and analytics to assess and track performance. AHRQ’s findings, products, and tools help catalyze improvements in health care delivery and wellness, make research available at the point of care, and provide data-driven insights to ensure that patients receive safe, high-quality care.
In 2016, AHRQ began investing in a series of grants to address opioid abuse - one of the nation’s most pressing health care crisis. These grants support evidence-based medication assisted treatment (MAT) in rural primary settings. They support also the HHS 5-point strategy plan to combat the opioid crisis:
1) Access: Better Prevention, Treatment, and Recovery Services;
2) Data: Better Data on the Epidemic;
3) Pain: Better Pain Management;
4) Overdoses: Better Targeting of Overdose-Reversing Drugs; and
5) Research: Better Research in Pain and Addiction.
AHRQ’s commitment to this plan includes funding research for 1) the prevention of opioid abuse, 2) access to treatment and recovery, and 3) pain management.
