Questions
1. The project calls to replace one of the glulam stringers, 4'10" of the deck timbers (approximately 39 boards), and to repave only the section of bridge deck that was repaired. Answer: Remove the entire deck and all asphalt. See revised Schedule of Items.
From prior experience and the notes on C-2 of the drawings, I would assume that each of the 2" x 6" deck boards on the whole surface of the deck is nailed to the deck board adjacent to it and is also toe-nailed to the stringer which is to be replaced. It appears that one would have to remove the whole deck and asphalt paving to get the damaged stringer out and that each of the existing deck boards would have to be re-nailed to its two adjacent deck boards as well as toe-nailing them to the old and new glulam stringer.
I am making an assumption that the old deck boards that are not being replaced, but just removed would need to be reattached to the deck in the same manner as the 39 new boards.
In effect, it appears that the successful bidder would need to remove and replace with new, all of the asphalt covering on the whole deck as well as remove and replace the old deck boards on the whole bridge and remove and replace with new deck boards (the damaged section) and re-nail each board in the manner prescribed in Note 1 on page c-s, in order to remove and replace the one stringer. Answer: Yes. See Revised Schedule of Items.
2. Would we be able to mix the concrete for the approach rail anchor posts on site?
Answer: Yes
3. Where is the water source for this project? Answer: Cow Creek at the site.
4. What are the insurance Requirements under AGAR 452.228-71 Insurance Coverage (Nov 1996). Answer: See Attached full text of the clause.
5. We believe that Option 1 of 100' or Option 2 of 125 ' should be a part of 556(02)
Bridge Railing, NOT part of 617(01) Bridge Approach Rail System since the relocation of the transition post would lengthen the bridge rail, not the approach rail. Answer: Option 1 and Option 2 will remain as pay item 617(01).
6. On page C-2 of the plans, "Typical Half Section" shows the diaphragm dimension as 4 x12 X 4'-0". I believe each diaphragm would have 2 boards of that dimension? Answer: The two boards for each diaphragm are 4”x12”x4’-0”.

Amendment No. 2
7. Do we use the existing hardware for the new diaphragms or do we use the same type of hardware which is new? Answer: Use new hardware, same type as existing.
8. On page C-2 of the plans, it shows a 3/4" hole in each end of the new glulam stringer. What is the purpose of this hole? Answer: The hole is for inserting a dowel that will embed beyond the stringer and into the abutment. The hole size is to be verified in the field, example if hole is 13/16” then the dowel will be, 3/4”.
9. How is the stringer attached to the abutments on each end of the bridge?
Answer: With the dowel.
10. If there is a bolt or pin in the existing stringer, we believe you may have to remove the entire deck to lift the stringer off of the pin unless the pin should drop down. Answer: Yes. It will be necessary to lift the entire deck to remove the stringer.
11. Do we install a new pin at this location? Answer: Yes.
What are its dimensions? Answer: Dimension of the hole is to be verified in the field.
