· Collect data along a 50’ transect, 180° from plot center

· Starting at 1-ft., record point-line intercept data by dropping a pole in 1-ft. increments along the transect and record the cover type hit

· Only record basal cover for live and dead species (the pole has to hit the base of the plant for it to be recorded)

Tree Data – Conifer seedlings & saplings Plot:____________________________

· Choose the appropriate radius that will represent the area, tally the number of conifers with a DBH less than 1-inch by height class (to the nearest foot,1’, 2’, 3’…), then multiply the number of aspen tallied to equal the number of aspen in a 1/10 acre radius (necessary for ExamsPC)

· If using a 1/100 acre plot, (11.8) radius, multiply the number of aspen by 10

Tree Data – Aspen suckers & saplings Plot:_______________________

· Choose the appropriate radius, tally the number of aspen by the classes listed below, then multiply the number of aspen tallied to equal the number of aspen in a 1/10 acre radius (necessary for ExamsPC)

· If estimated more than 500 stems/acre, use a 1/1000 acre (3.7’) radius, then multiply the number of aspen counted by 100

· If estimated less than 500 stems/acre, use a 1/100 acre (11.8’) radius if there are at least two aspen (live, dead or damage) within the radius, then multiply the total count by 10

· If there are less than two aspen in the 1/100 acre radius, expand to a 1/40 acre (18.6’) radius and multiply the number of aspen by 4

· The number ‘1’ in the height column represents the aspen height class <1.5’ and ‘2’ represents aspen height class ≥1.5 -4.49’

Plot radius (circle one): 3.7’ 11.8’ 18.6’

Aspen saplings (≥1.5’ – 4.49’ tall)

· Multiply the number of aspen tallied by the appropriate number (100, 1 0 or 4) to record the number of aspen stems per 1/10 acre in the Final Count column.

Tree Data

· Record standing tree data in a 1/10 acre radius (37.2’ & adjusted for slope) from plot center for trees ≥4.5 ft. tall with a DBH ≥ 1”

· Tally aspen ≥4.5’ tall with DBH less than 1-inch (fill out Tree Status, Species, Count (tally) and 0.5 in the DBH column

· Tally dead and down logs that are ≥8 ft.in length with a diameter ≥12” in a 1/5 acre radius (52.7’) from plot center (record Tree Status ‘X’). Fill out Tree Status, Species, and Count (tally)

· For Tree Status record L = Live Standing, D = Dead Standing, X = Dead Down

· If collecting char height, record this data in the Remarks section
