GENERAL NOTES
Mobilization: For Bid Item 2: Callahan Creek Road Decommissioning, the closest available lowboy turnaround is at the junction of NFS Roads 414, 4530 and 4541 (see project maps). Equipment will need to be “tracked” from this junction approximately 2 miles up Road 4530 to begin work on Road 4521 and approximately 0.6 miles on Road 4541 to the beginning of the work.
Construction Staking: Stations for most work items have been flagged on the ground, however some flags may be missing. The Contracting Officer will flag the stations shown on the work logs before work occurs.
Access: To provide vehicle access along the project roads the Contractor may need to remove earth berms, rocks, slide material and other debris, slope back vertical banks and construct temporary road through slump areas. Proposals for temporary stream fords shall be submitted to and approved by the Contracting Officer before construction. This work is incidental to Pay Items 21159, 21160.
Stream Crossing Excavation (Pay Items 21161, 21162, 21163, 21164): Stream category (I, II, III or IV) was determined by measurement of the vertical distance from the road surface to the final stream grade elevation. Excavate the road fill down to the original stream channel which may be below and/or off to the side of the existing culvert location. Provide for the channel width which is shown on the Stream Channel List. The Contractor is required to determine where to start the excavation at each stream channel crossing so that the final result is in compliance with the contract.
See Stream Channel List (Construction Notes) for requirments regarding placement of waste material. Some stream sites have conditions such as springs that preclude wasting material immediately adjacent to the stream crossing.
Stream Crossings with Special Erosion Control Required: See Stream Channel List for sites designated as requiring Special Erosion Control. These sites have legal requirements to protect water quality. Culvert removal will not begin until authorized by the Contracting Officer. In order to minimize sedimentation all possible excavation needs to be completed prior to culvert removal. Slopes will be excavated to finished grades to accommodate the specified channel width except for the minimum amount of material necessary to keep water flowing through culvert and to allow machine access over the culvert. All material on top and sides of lowest section of culvert will be removed. An adequately sized disposal area for remaining material will be available within reach of machine. Rocks of adequate size and number for grade control structures will be staged at inlet and outlet areas prior to culvert removal. The Government will determine the need to install Government Furnished sediment control materials and may require Contractor’s assistance using Rental Equipment 62201.
Rock: Except for rock delivered under Pay Item 25170, obtaining, stockpiling and placing rock for all other work is incidental to other pay items. Rock may be sorted from road fill material excavated during the prosecution of the work or excavated and hauled from any rock sources found along the road. Sites developed for rock borrow will be left in a stable condition. Rock may need to be moved up to ¼ mile from sources to installation sites. Notify Contracting Officer if specified rock size is unavailable within ¼ mile of any site. Slash will be allowed as a substitute for rock only where specified in the work log. Rock size is specified by the minimum sieve size the rock would pass through.
Delivery of Rock (Pay Item 25170): This rock will be used to augment rock obtained on or near work sites for armoring drainage structures and installing grade control. Placement will be incidental to other pay items. Local rock sources for up to 18” diameter rock have been identified on NFS Roads 4521 and 4541 (see Callahan Project Area Map). Rock is located on or near the ground surface at both local sources. Larger 30” diameter rock will be obtained commercially. Note there are limited locations on the project roads for truck turnarounds. New turnaround locations will be approved in advance by the Contracting Officer.
