Continuation of Amendment Three (3) Page 3
Can there be any relief on the maximum work week limitation of Monday through
Saturday? Answer: The Forest Service will favorably consider requests for variation for specific bridges.
Were the original drawings from as early as the 1940s? Answer: Yes, and possibly as early as the 1930s.
Does the USFS have information regarding previous methods of installation/repair for these bridges? Answer: Yes however, after review of the photos, they are very limited utility and are not being made available.
It appears that most of the timber members of the bridges will be replaced except for the deck planks, joists, and the bridging blocking between the joists. Is that correct?
Answer: Refer to the drawings and specifications for individual bridges for what is to be replaced for each structure.
Are the connections between joists and floor beams significant enough so that it might destroy the joist when removing the floor beam? Answer: The connections may well be substnatial and contractors are cautioned to use care.
Are the toe nails spiral spikes? Answer: We do not know.
Does the USFS intend for contractor to reuse hardware since there are manufacturing details for new bolt plates? Answer: The USFS intends that contractors should reuse hardware if possible but if not to supply new.
What will the hourly labor be used for? Answer: For miscellaneous work that arises that is not detailed in the specifications or drawings.
Does the USFS know the age of the towers at the 4 th of July and McConnell bridges?
Answer: No.
There appear to be two Item B-1.4s in the contract. Should one of them have a different item number? Answer: Yes, the Boulder Creek item should be B-1.5
What is the size of the shear pins to be replaced for the Mocus Point Bridge (sheet 6 detail)? Answer: The USFS does not have the size. The contractor should verify the size of the existing pins.
For certain bridges, the requirements call for refitting the steel hanging cables and recambering to the specified camber. Experience has shown that large loads, i.e. pack strings, can change the camber. How will the USFS handle this potential? Answer: The
USFS has not experienced this problem except over long periods of time. If the camber is set according to approved methods, the USFS would not necessarily require it to be reset it again and again.
