Includes excavation, general backfill, and compaction around improvements.

B.

Defines suitable, unsuitable, and excess excavation. Explains procedures for handling excess excavation and unsuitable excavation.

1.02

DEFINITIONS

Suitable Excavation: Excavated material suitable for use as backfill. Suitable excavation does not contain rock greater in size than that approved for the specific backfill purpose, frozen earth, clods, debris, or material with an exceptionally high void content (vegetative matter). The size of rock is dependent on the purpose and location of the backfill. Refer to the individual sections for backfill definitions.

Unsuitable Excavation: The opposite of suitable excavation. Excavated material not suitable for use as backfill.

C.

Excess Excavation: Surplus excavation that is not needed to complete construction. Excess excavation can be either suitable or unsuitable excavation.

1.03

PROTECTION

Protect excavations from accumulation of water. If clay soil becomes saturated, compact after it has dried as specified herein.

B.

Protect excavations from freezing. If frost action occurs, compact ground after thawing as specified herein.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.01

BACKFILL AND FILLS

A. Use the excavated material as specified below.

1. Remove rocks over 6" in maximum dimension, ice or frozen earth, muck, debris, and earth with high void content.

2. Remove rocks over 4" in maximum dimension for backfill placed within 12" of foundation.

3. Materials removed in stripping shall not be used for backfill.

2.02

BEDDING AND BACKFILL MATERIAL

Initial backfill shall be select earth material taken from the excavation or other designated sources. Material shall not contain any frozen earth, clods, debris, or material with an exceptionally high void content (vegetative matter).

B.

Subsequent backfill shall be earth material free from large rock greater than 9” in its largest dimension, frozen earth, clods, debris, or material with an exceptionally high void content (vegetative matter).

2.03 IMPORTED MATERIAL

A.

All fill material shall be approved by the Project Manager prior to its use. Material shall meet the soil characteristics of the surrounding site for color, texture, and composition.

B.

On-Site Material: In general, the on-site soils are suitable for use as fill.

C.

Broken concrete or asphaltic pavement shall not be used as fill material.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.01

EXCAVATION

Perform to the lines, grades, and elevations indicated. Extend excavation a sufficient distance from walls, and footings to allow for safety, placing and removal of forms, installation of services, compaction of backfill, and for inspection.

1.

Bottoms for footings, and foundation walls shall be level, clean, true to size, and to undisturbed or compacted soil, clear of loose materials.

3.02

BACKFILLING

Place and compact fills and backfills adjacent to structures in such a manner as to prevent wedging action or eccentric lodging upon or against the structures.

1.

Remove forms, and clean the excavation of trash and debris prior to backfilling.

2.

Do not place backfill against any concrete footings or structure without prior permission of the Project Manager and in no case less than 1 days after placement of concrete.

3.

Place backfill in horizontal layers not more than 12" thick with the proper moisture content for the required degree of compaction. Flooding or puddling not allowed. Compact each layer as specified.

4.

Provide for anticipated settlement and shrinkage of the backfill and for the finished grades required.

5.

Prepare subgrades for gravel fill areas level and free from soft spots. Place and compact earthfill where required to raise subgrade. Place gravel to the lines and grades shown. Compact the gravel sub-base as specified until a smooth, uniform use surface is obtained.

3.04

COMPACTION

Compact each layer with a hand compaction plate tamping equipment. Operate the compaction equipment over the full width of each layer until visible deformation of the layer ceases. Make at least three complete passes
