Questions and Answers

1. On the Wilderness sections of trails. How far from the trailheads are the proposed work sites?

A: Most work on the upper Middle Fk. takes place between 1 mile above Elkhorn Ck and Rapid River. On the middle Middle Fk work lies between Little Ck and Pine Ck. below Cougar Ck. Ranch. Work on the lower middle Fk takes place on the lower section around Wilson Ck. but some work is above Camas Ck.

On Pistol Cr. work takes place in avalanche areas about 14 to 18 miles below the trailhead above Little Pistol Ck.

2. The upper section of the middle fork trail states it is 35 miles long. Is there maintenance on the 35 miles or just the distances in the bid form? If there is maintenance on the entire length of the segment are the "heavy" Items Listed separately (Water bars , stream crossing etc..) and light maintenance is for the rest?

A: Work will be concentrated on the lengths listed on the schedule in the areas described above. Other work may be added as necessary.

3. Are there specific camp locations for each segment of trail?

A: Refer to Section H-2, (c). Camp site locations will be identified and authorized by permit.

4. Besides the Lower section that consists of the rock retaining wall is there aggregate replacement associated with the other two sections? If so how far from the borrow source are the areas?

A: Aggregate or borrow placement will be listed in the schedule if it is a bid item. Work may be added that includes borrow or aggregate and will be negotiated when the work is identified. Borrow sources will be located within a half mile, but usually closer to the work site.

5: The bid package states that drilling and blasting will be required, but I cannot find any further description as to actual requirement. Can you clarify this so we can come up with a price?

A: Under Section C, C-3 Trail Descriptions, The description of work included for Lake Creek Trail describes the Rock Removal required that is included in the Schedule. Blasting work that may be added to other trails as additive work items would be negotiated.

6. I have a trail excavator that I can adjust the track width from 28" to 32". On a trail with a 24" tread width requirement, can I perform the work by constructing a 28" width then pulling it back to 24" as I back out of the project?

A: Yes, that would be acceptable, the final trail condition will be inspected.

7: Logging out can be highly variable, particularly in burned out trail sections. How can I bid logging out costs without seeing the condition of the trail?

A: Unfortunately, we were not able to conduct pre-bid showings of the trails on the schedule. We are counting on experienced trail workers to be familiar with average working conditions on mountain trails to bid what they are most likely to encounter. Conditions for logging out can change from when notes are taken to when work actually takes place. For the purposes of this contract, we would like bids for logging out to be based on the assumption that there are 25 trees per mile.
