SECTION C - Description, Specifications & Work Statement

C.1 DESCRIPTION OF WORK

Alpine Tunnel Historic Masonry Stabilization and Enhancement

Work consists of the furnishing of labor, equipment and materials to stabilize and preserve the standing random stone masonry walls of structures in the Alpine Tunnel Historic District, for improved visitor safety and historical experience. The remains of the walls of the large stone Engine House and Section House, built in the 1880s for a railroad tunnel through the Conitnental Divide, stand some 3-15 feet high and have collapsed significantly in the past 30 years. The remaining walls need to be re-mortared, and stabilized so that they are less subject to collapse and water infiltration, and have good basal support.

The base contract will repair and stabilize one collapsed building (the Engine House), along with vegetation removal and applying preservative to certain embedded wood members. Optional bid item 1 will treat the masonry at a second stone ruin, the Section House. Optional bid item 2 will construct two short (25 feet long each ) compacted aggregate gravel pathways at the Engine House, by clearing large stone rubble , grading andapplying trail material to provide a smooth walking surface.

Several short sections of the wallsadjacent to doorways or window openings will be reconstructed by 2 to 3 feet, where sufficient material and photography exists to allow these openings to be rebuilt to illustrate the former appearance.. Most of these openings had decorative quoined corners. Craftsmanship that is compatible with the historical significance of the site is of very high importance.

The attached Stabilization Plan from 2001 (Attachment 1 & 2) will be the basis for the masonry wall work. The drawing (Attachment 3) shows the concept for the pathways.

C.2 PROJECT LOCATION

The project is located in eastern Gunnison County, northeast of the town of Pitkin. It is accessible by narrow graded dirt road. It is located at 11,600 feet in elevation. Bidders should not expect to access this site after October 15 or before June 15 most years. See Attachment 4, Topographic Map.

To reach the site, drive east on US Highway 50 from Gunnison to Parlin. Turn northeast onto County Road and go to Pitkin. Continue three miles past Pitkin on FR 765 to the tunnel turn-off, FR Road 839, and turn right (east). Drive appr. 10 miles on this narrow dirt road to the site. The site is accessible by regular two-wheel drive. Upon reaching the Tunnel parking area, walk past the gate to the wood frame Telegraph Office. Both masonry ruins are located directly across the grade/road from the Telegraph building, the Engine House being the closest to the parking area and containing a two-story portion with remains of a water tank, and the more distant one to the north being the Section House (or boarding house) ruin.

C.3 PREBID CONFERENCE

A prebid trip to the site will be held on September 23. There will be a meeting at the town of Pitkin, Town Hall parking lot at 11:00 a.m., followed by a trip to the tunnel historic district. If weather permits. For more information, contact LeighAnn Hunt at 970-874-6691.

C.4 PRICE RANGE: Between $25,000 and $100,000.

C.5 PERIOD OF PERFORMANCE: Work will be completed during the summer of 2010 and completed no later than October 30, 2010. A notice to proceed will be issued prior to start of work.
