Native Seeding Area (Wet Mesic) Total Acres = 50.0
Site Preparation:
No site preparation is necessary if seeding is conducted prior to May 1, 2011. If seeding occurs after May 1, 2011 site preparation shall occur as follows: soil surface shall be disked such that existing vegetation blends with the upper six inches of topsoil. Discing shall be performed until the average size of existing vegetation, stalks and leaves does not exceed an average of 6 inches in size. Herbiciding may be substituted for disking with prior authorization from NRCS.
Seed Selection: Area shall be seeded with the following native mix (quantities shown are PLS) :
Oz Per Total OZ Total LBS Scientific Name Common Name Acre Required Required
Asclepias incarnata Marsh milkweed 1.0 50.0 3.1 Aster novae-angliae New England aster 0.5 25.0 1.6 Baptisia lactea White wild indigo 1.0 50.0 3.1 Helenium autumnale Sneezeweed 1.0 50.0 3.1 Liatris pycnostachya Prairie blazing star 0.5 25.0 1.6 Liatris spicata Marsh blazing star 1.0 50.0 3.1 Monarda fistulosa Bergamot 1.0 50.0 3.1 Rudbeckia hirta Black-eyed Susan 1.0 50.0 3.1 Silphium perfoliatum Cupplant 1.0 50.0 3.1 Verbena hastata Blue vervain 1.0 50.0 3.1 Zizea aurea Golden Alexander 1.0 50.0 3.1 Andropogon gerardii Big bluestem 16.0 800.0 50.0 Elymus canadensis Canada wild rye 16.0 800.0 50.0 Elymus virginicus Virginia wild rye 8.0 400.0 25.0 Panicum virgatum Switchgrass 24.0 1,200.0 75.0 Sorgastrum nutans Indian grass 16.0 800.0 50.0
Origin of seed must be no greater than 200 miles from project area. Native seed shall be true to species packed separately and labeled with scientific name, PLS weight, common name, percent purity, and percen germination. Seed shall be free of non-seed debris and free of noxious weeds. Seed quantities and quality must be verified by the Technician or Engineer before seeds are mixed.
Seeding Dates: Seeding may be conducted during the following time periods Fall: 10/22 - Freeze up Dormant - winter 2010 through spring 2011 thaw - if there is less than 3" snow cover Spring: Thaw - 6/30
Seeding: Seeding may be accomplished by one of the following methods Drilling: If ground is not frozen, a no-till drill appropriate for planting native seed may be used Broadcasting: For traditional broadcasting, inert material (sawdust, potash, vermiculite) may be used in combination with seed mix as a carrier. Broadcast carrier shall be approved by NRCS prior to mixing seed application. If seeding occurs during spring seeding window, area shall be raked, rolled or cultipacked immediately after seeding.
Mowing:
No post-seeding mowing required under this contract

SEEDBED PREPARATION
During the recommended seeding periods, seedbed preparation shall immediately follow construction activities. Prepare a fine, firm seedbed to a minimum depth of 3 inches.
SEEDING
Inoculate legumes with the specific inoculum for the species in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations. When using a hydroseeder, five times the recommended rate of inoculant shall be added to the hydroseeder. Inoculant shall not be mixed with liquid fertilizer. Seed grasses and legumes no more than 1/4 inch deep. Seed may be broadcast or drilled as appropriate to the site. Seeding shall be done prior to mulching, except for dormant seedings.
MULCHING
Spread mulch uniformily. Straw and hay shall be applied at 1-1/2 to 2 tons (60-70 bales) per acre (6-7 strands thick). Straw mulch shall be anchored into the soil approx.
2-3" using a serrated disk. Mulch may also be anchored using liquid tackifiers or netting installed per manufacturer's recommendations. Bedding pack animal manure may also be used as mulch.
Dormant Seeding - Mulching shall be done prior to seeding and immediately after seedbed preparation.
