See C.5.4.3. for a description of plantable and unplantable seedlings. Immediately place the plantable seedling in the planting hole, with the seedling tree roots or plug in a natural vertical position. |
C.5.2.3.
Pack soil firmly around each seedling, close the planting hole at the bottom, (no air
pockets), as well as at the top so as seedling will withstand being pulled from the ground by the terminal group of needles.

►Containerized longleaf seedlings are to be planted within (14) days.
►Bare root loblolly / shortleaf seedlings are to be planted within (21) days.
►Containerized loblolly / shortleaf seedlings are to be planted within (14) days.
Of delivery to the Forest Service at Savannah River from the nursery.
C.5.4.2.
Bare root seedlings furnished will be "bed-run" and will contain a low percentage although an unknown amount of unplantable seedlings. The plantable / unplantable seedling ratio will vary in each bag and will not be known exactly until the individual bag has been used.
C.5.4.3.
Unplantable seedlings are not to be planted. Any unplantable seedling planted will be counted as improperly planted, but will not be counted as "waste" seedlings.

C.5.4.4.
| Unplantable seedlings shall be discarded while plantable seedlings that are discarded by the contractor will be counted as "wasted" seedlings. Excess "wasted" seedlings will be calculated on a per acre basis and will be paid for by the contractor. Contractor will be charged the price that the Forest Service paid for the seedlings. Contractor will not be allowed to sort and discard seedlings in advance of planting. | Seedling bags, boxes should not have prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. |
C.5.5.7.
Water roots of seedlings in bags if roots begin to dry. Do not puddle water in bags as
excess water can drown root tips and promote mold on the seedlings.
C.5.5.8.
Tree seedling roots shall not be pruned by the contractor. Any pruning required will be performed by the Forest Service prior to furnishing seedlings to the contractor for
planting.

seedlings. Do not abuse the seedlings by hitting or striking the roots or plugs against any objects to remove excess soil. Do not expose seedlings to sun or wind.
C.6.1.2.
Hand Planting. Only one bag or box of seedlings will be opened at a time. Individual planters will share seedlings in each packed bag rather than each planter having their
"own" bag. Planter is to remove only one seedling at a time from personal planting bag immediately before planting seedling in a prepared hole.
C.6.1.3.
Planter shall gently remove seedling from personal seedling bag to prevent striping or
other root damage. Quickly and gently insert seedling into planting hole.

seedlings, dropping the unplantable seedlings on the ground (Section C.5.4.3).
C.7.1.2.
Open seedling bags or boxes in machine planter shall be covered or closed each time the planter is not planting or stopped regardless of duration.
C.7.1.3.
Any damaged or surface drying of seedling roots or plugs due to contractor neglect or abuse will result in the contractor being charged for the seedlings at the Government’s cost for the seedlings.
C.8.1.

F.1.4.
All contract areas will be sampled on a grid system. Sampling will consist of 1/100th acre plots to determine the total number of properly and improperly planted seedlings within the sample plots. Plots will be taken at the minimum rate of (1) per (2) contract acres or approximately (310) feet apart on a grid basis over the entire area. The total average number of planted seedlings per acre will be determined by adding the total number of correctly planted trees per plot plus the total number of improperly planted trees per plot, dividing by the stand acres and multiplying by 100 (1/100th acre plot).
Total Number (correct + incorrect) planted, - Divided by (#) of plots (stand acres) x 100 = Total Planted Per Acre (See Section G and Attachment 4 Forms)
F.1.5.
