Construction Specification 95 – Geotextile, Section 7
Items of work to be performed in conformance with this specification and construction details therefore are:
A. Subsidiary Item, Geotextile
1. This item shall consist of furnishing and installing geotextile beneath the rockfill and rock riprap to form the crossings as shown in Drawing 3 of 3, and furnishing and installing geotextile beneath the rockfill to form the road repairs and new access roads as shown in drawing 5 of 5.
2. The geotextile shall be Class 1, non-woven, needle punched.
3. The geotextile shall be installed on a smooth subgrade to cover the area beneath the rockfill.
4. The geotextile shall be placed mainly for road stabilization, as discussed in Section 5;
however it shall be orientated perpendicular to the roadway centerline. In addition, pins used to secure geotextile do not have to be removed for final installation, unless recommended by manufacturer.
5. The edges of the geotextile shall be keyed-in a minimum of one foot on each side. Sections of geotextile shall be overlapped a minimum of 24 inches at each joint.
6. Final surface of the geotextile shall be smooth with as few wrinkles as possible.
7. The geotextile installation shall be approved by the NRCS inspector before the rockfill is placed.
8. Furnishing and installing geotextile is made subsidiary to the bid items where the material is installed. All compensation for furnishing and installing geotextile shall be considered as included in the lump sum bid price for Bid Items 2 - 15, Construct Crossings, Bid Items 16-21, Road Repair and Bid Item 22, Construct Access Road.
B. Subsidiary Item, Geocell
1. This item shall consist of furnishing and installing geocell material to form the crossings as shown in Drawing 3 of 3.
2. The geocell material shall consist of strips of high-density polyethylene, connected by spot weld seams running the entire height of the strip. The interconnected strips shall form the walls of the flexible, three-dimensional cellular confinement structure when expanded. The polyethylene used in the strips shall have a density of 0.935 – 0.965 g/cm3 (58.4 – 60.2 lb/ft3) tested per ASTM D1505. The polyethylene shall have a homogeneously distributed carbon black content of 1.5 – 3.0% for ultra-violet light stabilization. The seam tensile strength shall be a minimum of 338 lbs (6” section) for the cell height. The strip thickness shall be 1.27 mm tested as per ASTM D5199. The nominal size for sheets of geo-cell material shall be 8 ft X 20 ft when expanded.
3. The geocell sections shall be installed edge to edge with no overlap required. The geocell material shall be anchored and joined according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
4. The geocell material shall be filled with rockfill as appropriate to prevent collapsing of

2. The geogrid material shall be a biaxial geogrid made from polypropylene that meets the following properties: minimum aperture size – 1.0 inches, ultimate tensile strength – 850 pounds per foot, tensile strength at 5% strain – 580 pounds per foot, resistance to ultraviolet degradation – 70%. The material shall be manufactured and distributed by companies willing to guarantee their products through documentation submitted for review and approval and provide necessary on-site technical installation support.
3. Width of the geogrid material shall be approximately 13 feet. The geogrid material shall be laid evenly on the geotextile as directed by the Inspector and anchored according to the manufacturer’s recommendations.
4. Rockfill shall be placed on the geogrid as specified in the manufacturer’s recommendations. See Construction Specification 25 for details of the rockfill.
